March Madness 2019 (last year - Don't Post)

Replies are disabled for this topic. Start a new one or visit our Help Center.

It is the third month of 2019 and for college basketball fans the start of three weeks of hoop madness (beginning on March 19).  My Kansas Jayhawks are a little short-handed this year, but in a one-and-done 64+team tournament the luck of the draw often brings favorable matchups.  You just never know what will happen.

In the meantime, it is time to commit to another month of health goals.

How It Works

The primary purpose of these monthly challenges is to keep track of your daily step goals for the month; though many of us track other things as well, like body weight exercises, sleep, trips to the gym, logging food, etc. This is not a competition to see who can do the most of whatever, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of the monthly total you can hit your goal.

Some might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and others might have a variable goal throughout the week, (and some might even plan days off!) for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = “6k steps a day,” or “not tracking”

Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for the monthly challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.

Suggested Posting Format
1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.
2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved out of the monthly minimum and or monthly total

Picture Scavenger Hunt — 3 pictures

Last month the theme of the photo scavenger hunt was to find three ‘odd duck’ type-photos, and we had several, with one being pretty literal.  Thanks @WendyB .  Though I suppose the goose might take offense to being tagged as odd.

ducksgoathouse.jpg

March will be the last month of winter for most of us (and summer from some of us).  It is usually a good excuse for a mini-vacation, or maybe a big vacation, so the task this month is to get out of the house (or hotel), walk about and find three pics that represent play or relaxation — maybe people, or animals — swimming, skiing, hiking, sunning; or fun places, or places like tourist attractions, playgrounds, circus tents, festivals … [edit] Thanks @SunsetRunner suggesting funny hats as a subcategory for  the play and relaxation pics.  Sadly, your suggested name of Madhatter March for this month came a bit to late, but I've updated my profile picture with a funny hat.

Posting

Although you certainly don’t have to post daily, you’ll likely stay closer to what you set out to do by updating the thread several times/week

Injury Notice
If you injure yourself during the month and need to scale back due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

Day 2 Goals

Step Goal: 5575 Steps  2/31

Days over 9000 Steps 0/4

Active Hours 6 hours a day  2/31

Sleep 7 hours a night 2/31

Hit peak heart rate 3 times a week  0/12

Cardio heart rate 60+ every day  1/31

Plank 1 minute every day  0/31

Yoga 20+ minutes 3 days a week 0/12

Log food and water intake every day  2/31

So I'm a bit behind on my daily goals that are new for this month.  I'm actually crushing the goals that I started working on last month, but falling short heart rate and planks.  I feel these should be easy goals to hit, so this first week while I'm trying to make it habit, I'm going to allow myself to make up missed goals by doing it twice in one day.  So today I plan to plank in the morning and the evening to make up for yesterday, and so forth.

This photo was taken last March when we were visiting the U.P. looking for a place to move to.  It was in March that we finally found the house of our dreams and we became Yoopers mid-April.

Tahquamenon Falls State ParkTahquamenon Falls State Park

If you are not from Michigan or nearby states, these terms U.P. & Yooper might be confusing.  Basically the state of Michigan is divided into 2 peninsulas, the Upper Peninsula or U.P. where people are Yoopers and the lower peninsula where people are trolls, because they live below the Mackinaw Bridge.  The U.P. is filled with some amazing natural wonders like this waterfall.  People travel from all over during the summer months to see this, but very few actually visit in the winter.

Hopefully as the month continues, I can get out and visit some of the other waterfalls near me.  We do have more snow this year then in the past 20 years, so we are all ready for some spring thaw to set in!

I wish I had as many dogs as you have goats!  But I imagine herding goats is great exercise.Dogs running the driveway.Dogs running the driveway.

These 3 keep me pretty busy.  We have about 3 ft of snow on the ground, so the only place I can walk right now is our plowed driveway.  The dogs run circles around me chasing each other as I circle the driveway.  I'm not sure if I'm herding them or they are herding me!

Day 4 Goals

Step Goal: 5575 Steps  4/31

Days over 9000 Steps 0/4

Active Hours 6 hours a day  4/31  (Barely - my last hour I had to push it for the last 70 steps on Day 3)

Sleep 7 hours a night 4/31  (And I almost missed this for Day 4, but caught a nap to make it up)

Hit peak heart rate 3 times a week  2/12

Cardio heart rate 60+ every day  1/31 (Day 4 was a new record with 174 minutes of cardio!)

Plank 1 minute every day  2/31  (I injured my elbow, so I'm modifying my planks just a bit to heal)

Yoga 20+ minutes 3 days a week 2/12  (And focusing on a new shoulder, arm, neck yoga workout to help heal my elbow more quickly!)

Log food and water intake every day  4/31

Temp outside on Day 4 was -25, burr!  And I had 2 unexpected appointments pop up.  So it was a crazy day, but I still got my steps in by breaking out the exercise trampoline which usually doubles as a dog bed in my house.  The dogs use it way more often then I do!  But I probably have that to thank for the high cardio minutes yesterday too!

Weather is supposed to be in the 30's all weekend so hopefully I will be able to get out and hike to some great picture locations!  What do you want to see most?  Frozen waterfalls, snowy fields with rivers and creeks, magnificent pine trees, or frozen lakes?  Hopefully I'll be able to hike during a wonderful sunset or 2 as well, the last few nights have been pretty but no pictures taken.
