March Madness 2020 — Step Challenge and Photo Scavenger Hunt

Replies are disabled for this topic. Start a new one or visit our Help Center.

It is the third month of 2020 and for college basketball fans in the US the start of three weeks of hoop madness (beginning on March 17).  My Kansas Jayhawks are flawed this year (can't shoot very well other than dunking), but in a one-and-done 64+team tournament the luck of the draw often brings favorable matchups.  You just never know what will happen.

In the meantime, it is time to commit to another month of health goals.

How It Works

The primary purpose of these monthly challenges is to keep track of your daily step goals for the month; though many of us track other things as well, like body weight exercises, sleep, trips to the gym, logging food, etc. This is not a competition to see who can do the most of whatever, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of the monthly total you can hit your goal.

Some might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and others might have a variable goal throughout the week, (and some might even plan days off!) for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = “6k steps a day,” or “not tracking”

Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for the monthly challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.

Suggested Posting Format
1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.
2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved out of the monthly minimum and or monthly total

Picture Scavenger Hunt — 3 pictures

March will be the last month of winter for most of us (and summer from some of us).  It is usually a good time for a mini-vacation, or maybe a big vacation, so the task this month is to get out of the house, walk about and find three pics that represent play or relaxation — People, or animals — swimming, skiing, hiking, sunning; or fun places, tourist attractions, playgrounds, circus tents, festivals.  Of course, the spread of coronavirus may result in the cancellation of many public events and if that happens where you are, maybe post some pics documenting how your community is reacting.

Posting

Although you certainly don’t have to post daily, you’ll likely stay closer to what you set out to do by updating the thread several times/week

Injury Notice
If you injure yourself during the month and need to scale back due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

Everything is closed so can even go out and have a Green beer. I have never had one and it does not appeal to me either 😂🤣 So I guess I'm happy being stuck at home 😁

Happy St Paddy’s Day to you, too, @WendyB! I did wear green today — but was at home, so no one saw! 😅 I can’t drink beer, much less a green one even if pubs had been open. I guess I could add green food coloring to my bourbon and water! 🥃 🍀

Yep do that @Jotex  I will add some to Wine later 😁 I didn't wear Green and I did Venture out for my walk. I'm a Rebel. No Governor will tell me to stay home from my walk 😂

I actually got up to do that @WendyB but the only food coloring I have is for decorating cakes, so it’s full of sugar. 😛 So I put the glass in front of a green photo. 😂

I am DEFINITELY finding this WFH thing to be a challenge to my routine.  I actually ate an afternoon snack of something I wouldn't normally do during the week, and boy did my stomach not appreciate that!  Yesterday I did not hit my goals, but today, I am going to test out some ideas on how to get my steps and trying to combat the want to just munch all day.

@SteppingBooks -- I found myself munching this afternoon too.  Jane made some scones earlier this week and they all seem to be gone now ... And then I wound up cleaning my overfilled plate for dinner even though I wasn't hungry anymore when I got about 2/3rds the way through.

Mostly it is shift in environment (harder for me to pass up homemade food than leftover baked goods that are always around the office), and bad routine today (we had a late dinner b/c Jane went to get the car inspection done before the state converts all the inspection stations into drive-through COVID-19 testing stations).  Need to make some adjustments since it looks like I'll be working from home for months instead of weeks.

On another note, I thought it was funny when I went to the grocery store this afternoon learned that the only food my neighbors apparently know how to make at home is sandwiches!  WTH?  I thought everyone was low-carb these days!

It is mid-week. Where is all the bread? It is mid-week. Where is all the bread?

I heard about the shortage of bread @Baltoscott and flour, as well as TP, bottled water, etc. And home cooked food is SO much better than the other. We also no longer eat much bread @WendyB (gluten sensitivity), but switched to gluten free white corn tortillas. You can put anything in it for a roll up sandwich... but a piece of cinnamon toast now and then is good.

@WendyB — we usually freeze bread too, which is fine since I almost always toast it.  But last night we decided BLTs would be nice and I went out to get some sourdough we like. It was just.not.there.  Found a nice multi-grain quinoa loaf that the store bakery makes daily though.

@WendyB  I've tried the drinking water part, but it doesn't seem to quite satisfy.  I think some of it is I want to chew on something.  It's also raining today too, so there goes my plan to sit outside and do yoga while answering emails.

@Baltoscott  Same!  It's the temptation of it sitting there.
