Measuring manual wheelchair mobility

Does anyone know if a fitbit device will measure my movements pushing my wheelchair? I use a manual wheelchair and would like to be able to keep track of and measure my distance and energy output. I do a lot of "extra-curricular rolling" in addition to just getting around. I like to stay healthy but rolling on a track is boring. I prefer sidewalks, walkways (the local mall in inclement weather) and the like.

Thank you for any input or advice.

@healthywheeler,

Unless you are willing to only track calories, I don't know of any Fitbit tracker that will suit your needs. The bicycle function might work for distance if it's linked to the GPS on your phone. Unfortunately, it sometimes loses the lock with your GPS.

On the other hand, if you use the Fitbit app on your phone, it can use your phone's GPS to track the distance all day. Your Fitbit can give calorie information. However, that's a pain in the neck.

The calorie calculation on my Charge 2 is quite accurate for all activities. It will vary by person, but the correction will be constant.

If you do order a Fitbit, I suggest ordering direct so you get the 45-day return for any reason warranty. Usually, they have good sales around the holidays. I expect one on Labor Day.

@Baltoscottmay know of a bicycle computer you can use. Perhaps you can find a specialized device for wheelchairs on a wheelchair racing forum.

hey there @healthywheeler and welcome to the community. There is not a tracker that will measure your distance without GPS because distance on trackers is measured in steps. However, there are lots of options for an HR tracker with GPS connected. One of them will get you the distance you are looking for and it will also capture your calories, heart rate and give you active minutes based on constant elevated HR. I would recommend reading the specs on each tracker so you can make an informed decision.
