Muscle trouble

ANSWERED

Hi all,

I have begun a running regiment called couch to 5k. I am on my fourth week. I chose to repeat because i was only able to complete two out of the three workout sessions last week. This morning while i was runnig the muscle in one of my leggs seemed to start giving out and it was a fight to finish the last minute of the run. i havent had this happen before. I ate breakfast, which included some carbs and mostly protien, and drank a decent amount of water. Any sugestions as to what happened, and how i can fix/ prevent it in the future?

Thanks a bunch

@sisterrunner - The first advice I would like to give you is to stop running when you feel pain. To do otherwise will likely compound the injury or excess strain on that muscle unnecessarily elongate recovery time.

Secondly, make sure that you wear the best shoes your budget can afford.

And thirdly, make sure to warm-up with a 10-min brisk walk before you start running; and finish off with 10 min. cool down walk at the end, followed by 5 min. of stretching.

Personally, I have long abandoned jogging and in favour of walk/jog intervals, thus significantly reducing my risks of injury and minimizing fatigue.

It may be advisable to stop running for a while, until you're certain that this leg muscle has fully recovered.

Hi @sisterrunner - I agree with TW. While C25K is a great program for beginning runners, it's not one size fits all. If you are feeling physical issues, slowwww down. Your body isn't ready for that step. It's fine to move back and repeat the prior week. It's also okay to take a week off. Regarding footwear, you don't say what you are wearing or how you came to have acquired them. I strongly recommend that you get fitted for a good pair of running shoes at a running specialty store. This is critically important. Most importantly, stick with it... You'll get there.

thanks for the advice. I'm not sure that it was a muscle injury so much as exteme muscle fatigue. My leg felt like it just did not want to go anymore. I've been told before that you sometimes have to push past the fatigue as long as you dont feel pain. I am wearing a pair of sketchers athletic shoes. Any other suggestions?

I would go to a good running shoe store and get fitted for the proper shoe. They look at your gait and a few other things.

If you have a fleet feet they are pretty good at fitting you.

Adopting an interval scheme would avoid that fatigue you've experienced and give you the same fitness benefit and probably a higher caloric burn. I like Asics personally, I've always been a fan, I have been using them for >years, always getting them on sale, two pairs for the price fo one. @WendyB with the Halloween hat is right on - do yourself a favor and get fitted with the proper shoe at an expert shop. There's not obligation to buy from them if you find their prices exhorbitant, but you'll know what to shop for, at a brick and mortar store or on line.
