New and have MS

 Hello,

     Well i finally got my fit bit all set up or atleast i think i have and I'm ready to get started with it, I have been looking around hte boards and have seen some people having problems with theirs and I have to say I am ready to be confused.

   I was recently diagnoised with MS and after going through the bad stage I decided to do everything i could to prolong it from moving past the stage i'm in. I started going to the gym on 11/25/14 weighing in at 177 lbs and as of 12/17/14 i was at 159, my goal is to get to 145, but sense i have leveled out i am hoping the fit bit will help me track more better. as well as reminding to do certain things, like eating LOL  only thing i have to watch is my Sat fats. but has been easy so far,

     I wuld love to find some others that can help keep me motivated to get over this final push and that might have any suggestions for me to use this new toy 🙂

Thanks

Saula

I also was diagnosed with MS, however later the diagnosis was changed.  I have problems with heat intolerance so have found water exercise fabulous for me.  I play water volleyball with a bunch of us older folks and find it a lot of fun.  I tried an MS diet a long time ago and losst 15 pounds and did not keep it off.  It is very low in fats and similar to some strict heart diets.  I was allowed 4 ouces of red meat a week, so combined it with ostrich meat to make hamburger.  I think I felt a little better.  I had a lot of trouble sticking to a diet that strict.  I am now 71 years old and want to get more active.  I also have fibromyalgia.

 Hi Bjhans

       I was just Dxed 8/2014 and haven't really tried any diets other than watching my Sat Fats and limiting those to less than 15 grams a day to reduce flair ups, it seems to be going alright for now, my biggest problem has been remembering to eat, with 4 teenagers, a husband, 3 dogs, working from home full time and being a full time student I tend to realize at midnight i haven't eaten so then drink some water and head to bed. so i know that doesn't help at all, Plus the only meat that i eat other than some fish is Chicken breast, again we are back to the " that doesn't help" So i know Diets aren't for me, so figure i would just stick with tracking the Sat. Fat and go from there. I am 48 and started going to the gym in Nov 2 times a week and I love it, it has taken me a while to get where i am now but i still have a long way to go to be more fit, My next big hurdle is to cut back on my smokig which started yesterday 🙂 only 15 cigs a day,  i ended the year on 2.5, so not to sure about that way. I may have cut it too much ;

 good luck and look forward to talk to you more

I quit smoking cold turkey, shortly after I got sick. It doesn’t help to have other health risks, I figured. I think that is when the weight really packed on. Decreased activity and increased eating. I have me and my husband. We are 71. My son who retired from air force is starting college next week to finish his last 2 years and get into computer system work. We also have a grandchild who we care for. He is gone most of the time in residential treatment due to multiple mental health issues. I eat for stress, for enjoyment, for any reason I can think of. I am enjoying tracking my food and will enjoy increasing my exercise. I have learned I can’t over do. A physical therapist told me to go at 80% of what feels right, which might vary day to day. I’m trying to balance my fats, carbs and protein. I have high cholesterol, so will watch saturated fats probably. We raise beef, so that is hard.

Saula,

I was diagnosed with MS back in early March of 2007.  I take Rebif 44mcg injections (3 per week) and have had no growth in lesions since taking the shots.

I found that finally losing all my excess poundage (130 pounds in 9 2/3 months) has really helped me to get over the overheating and leaden leg syndromes.

I can now regularly exercise and go on strenuous hikes without feeling wiped out or overheated.
