New to the fitness / step tracker world - Fitbit Surge

Good afternoon all,

After several months of thinking about the idea, I’m finally joining the Fitbit community with the purchase of a Fitbit Surge.

This is mainly because I’ve been on a bit of a health kick this year and interested in keeping track of the various activities I take part in, walking, football, running, gym / weight sessions and several classes, inc. Insanity and a weight class but in addition to this, myself and a large group of colleagues have recently signed up to a global challenge to see which team can generate the most steps over a 100 day period.

Therefore I’m wondering what advice people would give me with regards to maximising the use of my Surge in the various activities to accurately monitor all of my activity and most importantly, my step count!

For info, I’ve never had any kind of step or fitness tracker before so have some pretty basic questions as a start:

  • Will all steps be counted no matter what activity I’m taking part in? g, If the watch is set to a weights session but I’m walking between machines, etc, will my steps still be counted?
  • When taking classes, such as Insanity, what mode would
  • How are software updates carried out?
  • What is the best app to use on my Android phone, the official Fitbit app, or is there an app that is recommended ahead of this?

I’m in the process of reading through the forum as well as multiple other sources of info so have seen a large mix of reviews on some of the above but some of that is a little dated.

Many thanks in advance, I’m looking forward to see what feedback people have.

Yes, your steps will always be counted, even when you record a weight session. As I see it, the main purpose of telling your Surge about your workout is to get more accurate calorie data.

If you’re not sure about what activity to enter, just let it figure it out (autodetect).

You should be automatically notified of firmware updates, so there is nothing you need to do.

As to apps, definitely get the official Fitbit one. Then, you can link other apps to your Fitbit account on an as needed basis. For instance, many people who track their food prefer to use MyFitnessPal, which can be linked to Fitbit. I have a Fitbit Aria smartscale and I’ve linked TrendWeight to my Fitbit account, as I find it displays my weight data in a better way than Fitbit

yep all steps are counted. The only difference you will notice is the number of steps you log on the treadmill and elliptical vs your tracker.
