OctoberFEST 2020 — Step Challenge and Photo Scavenger Hunt

October is one of my favorite months. In the North the heat of summer is mostly gone, and the icy cold of winter isn’t quiet here yet; and in the South the cold weather is on the way out.  It is a GREAT time to get outside and move around.  Plus at least two good festive events — OctoberFest = funny clothes/bratwurst/sauerkraut — Halloween = equals more funny clothes!

How It Works

The primary purpose of these monthly challenges is to encourage you to set and hit your daily step goals for the month; though many of us track other things as well, like body weight exercises, sleep, trips to the gym, logging food, etc. This is not a competition to see who can do the most of whatever, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of the monthly total you can hit your goal.

Some might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and others might have a variable goal throughout the week, (and some might even plan days off!) for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = “6k steps a day,” or “not tracking”

Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for the monthly challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.

Suggested Posting Format
1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.
2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved out of the monthly minimum and or monthly total

Picture Scavenger Hunt — 3 pictures

The theme this month is … seasonal changes (a tree or flower or storefront at the beginning of the month, and again at the end); Halloween decorations/costumes, trick or treaters; German OctoberFEST related.

Posting

Although you certainly don’t have to post daily, you’ll likely stay closer to what you set out to do by updating the thread several times/week

Injury Notice
If you injure yourself during the month and need to scale back due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

My goals for OctoberFEST are pretty close to last month, but I'll bump the daily steps up by 1K, and increase my sleep target 5 more minutes on the goal days (baby steps!)

-16K steps/day
-1 pushup/day (I always do more, but this goal gets me into position!)

-1 pull-up/day
-15 weight-lifting days

-post 3 scavenger hunt pictures

-Unicycle: 20 min/day for 25 days.

-Sleep 6 hrs 15 min + 17 days or more during the month

-weight - down 2lbs

Targets for OctoberFEST:

10k steps once a week -/4

7k steps for 28 days -/28

200 sit-ups for 28 days -/28

175 leg raises for 28 days -/28

50 squats for 28 days -/28

50 seconds of front planks for 28 days -/28

30 seconds of left side planks for 28 days -/28

30 seconds of right side planks for 28 days -/28

Gain and maintain 1kg to my weight  -/54.5kg

I did a lot better than I was thinking, so I've significantly increased my goals for squats, sit-ups, leg raises and planks (ie everything except the steps) during September, so they are staying the same.  I'm also gonna allow myself 3 days off in the month for bad days with my disability.  I'm also gonna keep better track of my weight once a week, so I'm hoping to make it to 54.5kg by the end of October.

My September definitely went to pot with some things going on.  With the change to a HR monitoring device, I am going to up my calorie deficiency goal since it indicates I'm burning more than I realized (who knew?).  I also am going to have an insanely stupid goal to get a million steps this month because I'm apparently a masochist.

Sounds like fun.

I'll stay with the 10k per day steps, and 20 floors.  Also back to doing yoga, stretching, and light weights every morning.  The photos look interesting, but out here in the country we don't get trick & treaters. It gets VERY DARK in the country at night and very few homes are right on the road.

Yesterday was a bad day with my disabilities, so I was forced to have the day off from fitness and didn't achieve anything - didn't even do my squats or reach 7k steps.  Today is better so far though, so I'm gonna go and do my squats now before I forget.  I will hopefully pretty easily achieve the 10k steps tomorrow 'cos I've gotta go to my GP then the hospital as well as it being "marathon Monday" with our senior puppy's walks when I get back.
