Osteoarthritis of knees and which workout is best

Hi everyone,

I need a realistic workout that won't damage my knees further.  I am 2mm away from replacements and can't manage my weight without an active lifestyle.   All the fitbit work outs include cardio that really is rough on knees.

I have the same thing. I told the doc I wasn't getting new knees so he could buy a new car. LOL I'm 5 foot tall and was then 210lbs. He said I had to get the weight off and sent me to PT. They had me using the bike. It builds up you calf and thigh muscles to keep them strong for your knees. I first started losing weight and I'm down to 156lbs and haven't gotten shots in over a year. I got the fitbit for Christmas and was surprised to see how little I moved. Well I'm moving. I joined Planet Fitness and since I'm an early riser I lay out my clothes every night and go out the door to the gym first thing. I'm doing strength exercises for my legs that don't effect my knees and the bike. Is it easy... NO but it's a mind game. At 62 years old I want to age with grace.

Thanks, I’m going to get a recline bike for home, I practice Pilates and have done the PT sessions, like you I’m trying to increase movement. Thanks for the encouragement

In 2018 my knee was so bad that I couldn't bend it very much. Got X-rays and the Dr. said I'd need a knee replacement eventually but to hold off as long as possible. They gave me 3 injections of something made from the crown of a rooster - I can't remember the name of it now (it was not cortisone). That worked so well that I haven't been back. I do the elliptical machine at my gym, it's low impact since you're not picking your feet up. I also do weights to keep my leg muscles strong. I find that keeping my quadriceps strong helps a lot, along with lots of stretching. You already know Pilates so that's a great place to start for leg strength. I highly recommend yoga to keep your muscles flexible. I also have back problems but I've found that not being active makes it hurt much more than being active but careful.

Georgie59:  Rowing machine gives your knees full range of motion and strengthens the Quads, Bicycle for knee range of motion and quad strengthening( just don't use a lot of resistance), and an elliptical, but keep the ramps rather low.

Thank you very much. I will be thinking about it when I go to the gym this morning
