I'm planning on signing up for some 5ks and 10ks, and I'm having trouble finding ones in my area. I know people often reccomend active.com, but I find that that website can be a bit tricky to navigate because they include races that are hosted online and you just run it on your own whereever you are, and they don't have settings to filter those races out.

Hi AimeeMarie - I'm based in the UK and used to subscribe to "Women's running" they include a list of upcoming 5ks and 10ks all year round in their magazine - pop into a supermarket and have a cheeky flick through and you'll see if there's anything up and coming in your area at a glance.
I too find active.com a little frustrating, but the runningbug.com is pretty good at listing all kinds of running events taking place near you and you can filter by distance/area etc. Typing "local 5k" into google is something I'd use as a last resort because you tend to be hit by a lot of charity ad's etc, but you can find some interesting things there.
Also, my local gym often has events listings and things so might be worth popping into a lesiure centre/facility near you and seeing if they have any flyers up?

Also meant to add that runnersworld.com is a useful resource!

Running In The USA is a really good resource if you're in the US. You can look up races by state, then narrow it down by month or length of the race. There are usually links to the race, but even if there isn't, you can Google the name and city now that you know it exists.

Check your local running specialty stores, if you haven't already. Also Runningguru.com and Runnersworld.com can be great resources (in the back of the print version of Runners World Magazine, there are many races listed).
I haven't had issues with Active.com but I've been on there for several years. I haven't done any "virtual" races like you described, but friends do them. I guess they're good if you don't have a lot of events in your area. I'm familiar with a lot of local races so I just go to their websites and sign up directly. It gets easier once you know more about the events in your area. Happy running!
