Recenter December 2022 Step Challenge and Scavenger Hunt

I am repeating the 'recenter' theme from last December, since it just seems so apt this time of year.

The year 2023 is just around the corner, but before you get there take a breath, reflect, connect with your friends and family and take stock of all the things that went right this year. Have a drink or two, and a treat or two, and, of course, a walk/hike/run or two, or three, or more.

General monthly instructions are below, including the monthly picture scavenger hunt.

How It Works

The primary purpose of these monthly challenges is to keep track of your daily step goals for the month; though many of us track other things as well, like body weight exercises, sleep, trips to the gym, logging food, etc. This is not a competition to see who can do the most of whatever, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of the monthly total you can hit your goal.

Some might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and others might have a variable goal throughout the week, (and some might even plan days off!) for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = “6k steps a day,” or “not tracking”

Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for the monthly challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.

Suggested Posting Format
1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.
2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved out of the monthly minimum and or monthly total

Picture Scavenger Hunt

This month should be easy. Look for a holiday theme/meme while you are out and about and post at least three versions of the same scene/idea. Example: three different Santas, three different grinches, three different nativities.

DSCN7992.jpeg

Posting

Although you certainly don’t have to post daily, you’ll likely stay closer to what you set out to do by updating the thread several times/week

Injury Notice
If you injure yourself during the month and need to scale back due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

Thanks for this, @Baltoscott, and your timely seasonal thoughts.

Here are my targets, some of which are in recognition of December being the last month of the year, so relate to whole-year aims.

1.05 million steps in the month
Minimum of 30000 steps per day

Play the piano or the organ every day

Some DIY or gardening on at least 20 days in the month
3 dog walks daily, with each at least 3 miles
250000 steps per week
In bed before midnight every night except for Midnight Mass on the 24th, and New Year's Eve
In bed before 11:00 pm four times in the month

Complete each of these:

15M steps in 2022;

16M steps in 2022 (possibly before the end of Christmas Day)

100M all-time steps (since the start of 2013)

It has been an intense semester that has left me a bit exhausted, and it isn't over yet.  It's the last month before I start in a new position.  I'm optimistic that I will manage to have some energy to try to get half of my goals completed 🤣

Thank you again, Baltoscott, for keeping us trying to toe the line.  Everyone needs someone like you in their lives!

My goals seem so mundane after reading everyone else's!  However, they ARE my goals, and I will stick with them as much as possible.

walk 10K steps per day                                            2/13

walk at least 20 mins per day                                   1/31

gym and/or strength exercises at home                   4/13

eat less than 1,400 to 1,500 cals per day                 0/31

lose 0.2 lbs daily                                                       12/31

I found that limiting my calories per day to a firm goal is just inviting me to not achieve that, so I decided to go for a range of calories.  I think that is more realistic, anyway, unless I decide to eat the same thing day in and day out.

I’m dropping my Blue Days goal. Forgot I had ordered Advent Whiskey Calendars for both hubby and I. It’s a shot of a different whiskey (from somewhere in the world) every evening for 24 days! 🥃

Added 5 lbs on my cruise, so I'm looking to lose a couple of those this month. I know it is always tough to lose weight over the holidays, but there was just sooo much food on the cruise that mostly getting back to my normal habits should make a difference.

@kaynelvb -- eating the same thing day in and day out can be a decent temporary weight-loss strategy. When it's boring, you tend to eat less. I hope it helps. I've decided to count calories the rest of this month. That's not a long term strategy either, but it does seem to encourage me to pile on the veggies at most meals because the calorie density is low.

While I didn't get many steps in this weekend, I finally did some minor errands and  got some trees trimmed/cut down before they fall on the house.

I eat the same thing for breakfast and lunch every day but change my evening meal just about daily.  I also have found that I am eating more vegetables when I cook up enough of them to last me a week.  That way I only have to cook the meat for my evening meal and at times I just eat nothing but veggies, since they are just waiting to be eaten!  Yes, the boredom has hit me from time to time, but I also hate to have to plan three meals a day.  I guess I am just lazy!

@Jotex - wish I’d known about that advent calendar; my wife is a whiskey/bourbon connisour. I’m not a big fan, but I enjoy tastings when visiting friends and on the bourbon tours when we go to see my cousins in Kentucky.
