Recorded Stairmaster and Weight Routine! Not quite sure of the results.....

I tracked my Stairmaster and Weight Routine (leg day) yesterday. Its my first time recording on the Surge...

The stairmaster machine said I burned over 200 calories, while the Fitbit states 87? Did I not set something on the Fitbit correctly? I was sweating like crazy the whole time. The weight routine, I did for 27 Minutes and burned 102 Calories according to the Fitbit. So, my next weight routine, I'll make sure it lasts 50 minutes, but to only burn 102 cal's in almost 30 minutes doesn't seem like a lot to me?

I am literally hitting the "exercise" button, choosing Stairmaster or Weight and letting the timer go (the timer, heart rate, etc.)

Do I need to do anything else, it seems a little off to me? Unless this is just the fitbit telling me i have to work out harder? haha..

Any input would be great! Thanks!

Btw... my concern is more about time, heart rate and calories, not so much steps on the stairmaster.....

Does the same thing for me. I think the issue for lifting is that it only records avg heart rate over (5 min?) intervals so it loses resolution on the peaks. I can't explain the stair climber though. It usually records me 200+ calories under what the machine says on a 40 minute workout. Perhaps it is not detecting all of the heart beats or something.

I can't say specifically for the stairmaster as I don't use them very often (havent with the surge yet)..

However I will state that cardio machines drastically over estimate calories burned. So its hard to use the two devices and compare them in deciding that the surge is extremely low.

I can't address the stairmaster, but as far as the weights go, that sounds about right. The reason WHY it sounds right is because your body continues to burn calories for up to 36 hours AFTER completeing your weight training (due to the muscles rebuilding themselves)

Look at the stats for those workouts.

What was the avgHR - since that is the basis for the calorie burn, not steps?

It may be the HRM missed your HR being as high as it really was.

But unless you had separate confirmation, machine, finger/watch, ect, you might not know.

I suspect there could be two factors in play here.

1) This HR tracking technology, which great and the exact reason I purchased the Charge HR, is still really new. It will undergo many improvements in the years to come. I think the accuracy is probably less than what we will see on future models over time.

2) Cardio machines, as stated above by  @lilcheese,  tend to drastically overestimate calories burned. I never trust the calorie information on a treadmill, stair-stepper or stationary bike.

Still, if you worked really hard for a prolonged period of time I would say you most likely burned more than 87 calories. I wonder if perhaps your device wasn't fitted correctly and therefore not reading your heart rate and movement as accurately. I'm at a loss here. Hopefully someone better acquainted with the technology and logistics of it all can be more help to you.
