As a 911 dispatcher, I work 1900 - 0700 shifts. I am the only dispatcher on duty, as we are a small county. I am having a terrible time trying to increase my steps daily. We have conventional desks in a tiny area. It is not like I can get up and go walk around a whole lot. The restroom is located about 5 feet or so from where I am at. I think I have about worn a path in the floor from pacing back and forth.... let's put it this way.... 20 steps from one side of the room to the other. Period.
Being in such a confined area with limited access to breaks that would allow for longer walking time (due to the fact that I can't be more than a few feet a away from the 911 phones and the dispatch radio), can anyone with a similar situation or history... provide any tips that may make this 12 hour shift move more?

Have you considered getting an adjustable desk that would let you work standing or sitting (you can alternate periods of sitting and standing)? Standing won’t get you steps, but merely standing has you burn more calories than sitting, and it’s better for posture too. How about getting a wireless headset, so you’re able to pick up calls while moving around close to your desk?

Have you considered an under the desk exercise tool like pedals?

How many days a week do you work? What are your sleeping habits?
I think you need to maximize activity time when you are not at work.

Thank you for the great ideas. I will definitely talk to my supervisors about some of these.
I do think the idea to work more more on out of work time maybe the key. Yes the schedule is hectic and never set... but maybe just an hour or so outside of work will help some too.
Thanks

I bought one of those about 4 months ago for about $50.00. It makes a huge difference. I generally work from home as a software engineer so I get up and go downstairs and bike for about 500 steps every hour. I wear a strap extender on my Blaze around my ankle. You could actually put it under your desk and pedal while you work. Then when I finish my workday I go to the gymn for a couple of hours.

Do you get a lunch hour?
I usually do a 3 mile walk during my lunch hour.

Have the company invest in getting some stand up desk. I have one at work and it is awesome.
