Stomping STEPtember 2021 — Step Challenge and Photo Scavenger Hunt

Wow, 2021 is moving fast! Here comes autumn — back to school for the kids and teachers, a shift from hot to cooler temperature, and falling leaves and changing colors outside. Of course, it is just the opposite in the Southern Hemisphere -- cooler to warmer weather.  Either way, it is a great time to get outside, stomp around, get your steps and avoid the virus!

How It Works

The primary purpose of these monthly challenges is to encourage you to set and hit your daily step goals for the month; though many of us track other things as well, like body weight exercises, sleep, trips to the gym, logging food, etc. This is not a competition to see who can do the most of whatever, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of the monthly total you can hit your goal.

Some might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and others might have a variable goal throughout the week, (and some might even plan days off!) for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = “6k steps a day,” or “not tracking”

Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for the monthly challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.

Suggested Posting Format
1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.
2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved out of the monthly minimum and or monthly total

The photo theme this month is Stair Steps (It is Stomping STEPtember, after all).

Posting

Although you certainly don’t have to post daily, you’ll likely stay closer to what you set out to do by updating the thread several times/week

Injury Notice
If you injure yourself during the month and need to scale back due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

In honor of Stomping STEPtember, I'm upping my daily step goal by 1K.  Three or four dry days a week has been a pattern for me for the past few years (other than vacation periods), but sometimes I slip when unanticipated events come up. Empty calories! That seems to happen more as holidays approach so I'm adding that as a monthly goal to the chart to encourage myself to swap out dry days if I break the pattern to enjoy a get together.  We'll see how that goes.

@Baltoscott  Thank you!  It really dawned on me earlier: tomorrow is September

August didn't go how I was hoping between the transition back to in-person full time, and all the unusual heat/humidity.  Now that I have a month of this under my belt, I'm hopefully going to get back into a bit more of a groove (we'll see).  Instead of losing weight, I gained 0.8.  I need to make progress before October or I get medication (yuck).  I will have to try to get some stair photos this time.  Should be easier.  I have to climb 2 flights just to get to my office.  😂

Thanks for creating this challenge again. I just didn’t get my act together for August! I had too many unplanned events, some friends visiting from out of town and some sweltering weather. I’m ready to get back to a more regular schedule of workouts and walks (and sleep!) now that fall is nearly here.  I really want to focus on winding down earlier, working on the sleep goal. I think a lot of things will go better if I get better sleep. Fitbit seems to think I don't get much deep sleep.

@Baltoscott  I wish I could say the primary reason I take stairs is for my health.  The reality is I've been stuck in too many elevators, particularly on campus.  At one point with the building's construction plan, we had zero stairs we could use (there are three in our building), and their response was "just take the elevator".  I had some very choice words for them about that phrase.  We at least got one stairwell approved for use.
