Stomping STEPtember 2024--Step Challenge and Photo Scavenger Hunt

It’s STEPtember, my birthday month! — back to school for the kids, a shift from hot to cooler temperature, and falling leaves and changing colors outside. And just the opposite in the Southern Hemisphere, cooler to warmer weather.  It is a great time to get outside, stomp around, and get your steps. If you’ve not signed up for one of these before, read on and then come join us.

How It Works

The primary purpose of these monthly challenges is to encourage you to set and hit your daily step goals for the month; though many of us track other things as well, like body weight exercises, sleep, trips to the gym, logging food, etc. This is not a competition to see who can do the most of whatever, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of the monthly total you can hit your goal.

Some might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and others might have a variable goal throughout the week, (and some might even plan days off!) for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = “6k steps a day,” or “not tracking”

Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for the monthly challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.

Suggested Posting Format
1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.
2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved out of the monthly minimum and or monthly total

That's a lot of steps!That's a lot of steps!

The theme this month is STEPS, of course! Laminai, Belize.

Posting

Although you certainly don’t have to post daily, you’ll likely stay closer to what you set out to do by updating the thread several times/week

Injury Notice
If you injure yourself during the month and need to scale back due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

Thanks, @Baltoscott  - this great group on here will be among the first to know if I get any good news.

I'm going to have to be creative with the Scavenger Hunt again.  We'll start with a step I go over every day, and which I've spent plenty of time, especially in August, and mainly on my knees.  A couple of months ago, we had a problem with the drain that lies underneath that nice bright-looking manhole cover.  Let's just say that it's a culvert for all the household water.  It had last happened about thirty years ago, soon after we moved in to this house, and the chap who fixed it said that the repair might last a hundred years, or it could go tomorrow - this was because of the type of piping used by the water company, and installed a long time ago.  He wasn't far wrong, with it lasting those thirty years.  By this time, we'd forgotten about the drain, and it took me some time to find the manhole cover, as thirty years had deposited four or five inches of earth on top of it.  Anyway, we had it fixed, and I decided to tidy up the area around it, including securing the cable properly, and doing a little repair on the step you can see.  At the moment, I can do a little bit of such work first thing in the morning, just after my very short walk, so I got to know this step really well recently.

OK, two pictures, but they really count as one.  This is the Cubii, which apart from my very short morning walk, provides the only exercise I can take while not increasing the nerve pain.  I do about half an hour on this each morning, in a bid to keep my legs from getting too weak from underuse.  It has an RPM counter on it, and it keeps an overall tally of pedal revolutions too, so that helps to prevent it from being totally mindless!   I count steps on a little device that doesn't start with an F (shh!), and it tallies one step for each revolution.

Still waiting for news from London, so I'm going to badger the NHS referrals service tomorrow.

The horse is Mrs Vidd's from her childhood, which I repainted recently and gave new ears, made from worn-out shoes.

@Baltoscott Those flights of stairs you have provide a great quick workout opportunity at the start of your day!

Welcome on board. @Hemday🙂 Thanks, @Jotex.  Bit of a trying day with the NHS today, but half an hour of phone calls has undone the damage.  I'll ring the hospital again on Tuesday to see where we are now.

We joined an excursion group of ‘seniors’ on Thursday and went across the border to Landhus Ettenbühl near Lörrach, which has an old English style garden  and restaurant. Peter took this for an upcoming photo exhibition.

Well here I am back again. No, @Baltoscott my hospital visit did not go as planned! My op got cancelled as my heart rate was 29 and I got given a pacemaker instead! Then I had to travel home and go back a few days later for the original op. So I have spent the last couple of weeks travelling to Perth and back and languishing in hospital. Today is the first day I started to feel human again but I only did 7200 steps so didnt score anything on my goals. But thought Id post anyway because tomorrow I actually might get to 10,000 steps!
