Morning all. I've been religiously walking 1.5 miles every day for 3 weeks now. Yesterday I simply had to take a day off just because the pain in my legs and feet was beyond endurable. This is what happens when you work out in 5 year old sneakers. Went out yesterday and bought new ones. 1 pair strictly for my workout. I added arch supports, but still have sartorial muscle pain in my knees and hips and my ankles still hurt. What can I do to support these areas while Im walking and reduce the pain? I'm a fibro patient, so when I say pain, you can figure right about an 8 on a scale of 1-10. anything less I can usually live with.

hey there,
I agree with yarddog, you have to get good sportsshoes that are right for you personally. Go to a store that offers professional analysis of your gait, footstrike and so on. You might be needing that arch support, or you might not. A pro will be able to help.
Don't try going from 0 to 100 in a day. Like yarddog said, start slow and built on that. And do go see a doc if at all possible. There might be issues with any of your joints that need attention. These can be issues that are easily fixed with some targeted exercises (stretching your hip more, strengthening your ankles on a balance board), or they might be serious medical issues. Pain is our body's way to tell os something is up. Do listen!

It would be best to go to a good Running Shoe store and get advice on a good pair of running shoes
for you personally, based on your foot strike, etc. Walking shoes and "sneakers" will not do it for you.
Support for your knees and hips is something you might want to discuss with your MD, but often the
support will just weaken that area. The best solution is often rest and then slowly increasing activity.

Ouch!! I agree w/visiting a running store - you want to actually walk/run in something before you commit to it. I bought some great looking New Balances - bought more because I know they're great sneaks....not for me. Not enough support. If I had gone to a running store someone would have advised against them...for me.
Even if you don't feel like you are fit enough/walk enough/good enough/to go to a running store and commit, you are. They're some of the nicest people out there!!
Check is Fleet Feet is in your area. Great store!!
