Thinking of attempting a million step month in March.

I thought it would be cool to walk a million steps in a month.  I wonder if anyone knows of anyone who has accomplished such a goal.  I am a professional golf caddie and obviously walk a great deal.  I've only been averaging about 23,000 steps a day, so I would have to 'step' it up a notch.

To do it in Feb you would have to do 35700 steps a day because its a short month.

Oh you said March 32258 a day. So you still need to up it alot

I did it a few years ago. but its not something I want to do again

Hmmm.... that means you'll have to do a little over 32,000 steps a day. Yikes, that's a lot to do consistently. If you do a heck of a lot of walking for your job - and you do, and you put in a couple hours outside that - you could do it! I might join you as a cheering section and pledge to do 1/2 a million steps in March. I'll have to average about 16,000 steps a day. When the weather gets warmer I can do that!! Plus I do a lot of my stepping jogging on my mini trampoline. I want to work up to jogging through a whole hour and a half movie. I'm just getting active again. My best stretch on my tramp so far this year is a little over a half an hour.

Set the goal and go for it Smiley Happy

Thanks for your reply.  I know it's a big endeavor, but I would like to make a run at it.  March is my busiest month as a caddie, but I know I will have to spend some time on the treadmill or additional outside walking/running.  They biggest hurdle would be missing out on a day (getting a cold, etc...).  Making up for a missed day when you need almost 33k steps a day would be nearly impossible.  Set your goal and join me if you like.  John

If you really decide to do this, set a new topic and send me the link by pm if you can do that here. Very new to these forums but looking forward to being very active and supportive. And yes, I need support too! I've had a rough year and I'm getting back into it. Fighting emotional eating and not moving...so working toward more healthy activity. I am apprehensive about going to the new gym I joined and I have to get over that. Need some ideas to deal with the mental fear of being an older plump woman working out around young guys and women who are in much better shape than me. I don't want to rely on the scale or even inches lost right now...I want to concentrate on activity - what I'm doing on a daily basis. Really getting my steps up there is what I'm looking forward to doing! So, set it up at the end of the month, and get the link to me. I'll join you. Rosie

@ProCaddie I wish you loads of luck in your endeavor. That is a lot of stress on your feet and joints- remember to take care of your feet so they can keep carrying you.

@RosieO- I don't know what gym you belong to, but I am telling you.. the gym scape has changed regardless of what gym you joined. You have your cliché gym goers, but you also have every age, shape, size, activity level you can imagine working out right next to them. The first day is the hardest. You don't know where to go, what to do, how to start the machines. But the first day only happens once. Get through it and don't look back. After your first month of consistent going- buy yourself a swanky workout outfit.. give the clichés are run for their money.

I just accomplished this feat for the month of May.  I aimed at getting 40,000 steps per day to compensate for days that I couldn't walk much.  I was able to get 40,000 4-5 times per week.  The worst part was I spent many hours walking around my house late at night just to get it done.  My total for May ended up being about 1,000,070 steps.  Good luck.

Great accomplishment!  I'm almost half way through and I know how hard it was for you.  To get to 33k steps a day, I'm having to do a 6 mile run in the AM, caddie 18 holes at my job and do a 4 mile walk as a nightcap.  That's awesome that you were able to complete this.  If everything goes well, I will hopefully join you in a couple weeks.  John

Hey Wendy!  Thanks for asking!  Yes, I did make it.  I hit 1,000,000 steps on the 29th day.  It was considerably harder than I thought it would be.  29 straight days of 4 mile morning runs, caddying 18 holes at my job followed by 4 mile runs in the evening.  Here are the stats for the full month:

Total Steps:     1,073,500

Total Miles:      451

Calories Burned:   134,500

Active Minutes:   8,741

Beginning Weight: 177  Ending Weight 160

Cool accomplishment...Glad I did it...won't do it again!

You guys had me thinking about this so we set up a challenge for last month. We had 4 of us trying to make it and amazingly we all did. Was a lot of fun, not something I'll be attempting every month though lol

Sal,

Great accomplishment!  Even with walking a great deal with my job, It was much harder than I expected.  You had a big day on May 17th.  I think the most steps I had in one day was about 45,000.  Congrats!
