I would like to measure the number of sit-ups I do every hour, starting at quarter to the hour and ending on the hour. Is there a way to track this?
(I only bought my fitbit today ... so I am totally new to the functionality)

No.
First, device is looking for impacts that would be similar to impact of, well, steps.
Second, calorie burn is estimated for, well, steps.
Get a lap clicker, good 'ole metal one.

Interesting
When I do sit-ups I get a number of "steps" close to the number of sit-ups done !
So it is only intended to be a walking / running device ?

if it happens to, great, don't count on it all the time.
And no, the calorie count for step-based activity is not close to situps. Unless you happen to do the speed exactly to match the two.
In which case you'd already have an estimate on the situps, and would just manually add the activity.
Read the FAQs, all non-step-based activity is going to be wrong on calorie count - swimming, biking, elliptical, rowing, ect.
Look up "home exercise" - that would be the correct level.
