Tracking exertion level

I am curious what everyone does to keep track of exertion levels.  By this I mean there is a difference in calories burned between walking leasurely with a friend or spouse then walking during a workout where you are putting forth more effort and walking faster.   During my workouts I do circuit training which I have to log as well as a fast walk ( knee issues) as I do laps.  What I have done so far is to just ad 5 - 10 minutes of circuit training to make up for the difference but is there a more accurate way of doing it?

I use a Garmin Forerunner 210 w/ Heart Rate Monitor for all my workout runs so I get a more accurate calorie burn #.  I still keep the Fitbit on during workouts, its just when I log my planned runs into myfitnesspal I go with the calorie burn my HRM gave me and use Fitbit for calorie burn from regular daily activities (grocery shopping, running to the store, etc.).
