Very Varied February 2021 Step Challenge and Scavenger Hunt

So how did your January Reset go?  Are you still holding strong on those New Years’s resolutions?  Or have you completely forgotten about them?  🙂

Well, Welcome to Very Varied February. Just switch things up a bit. MAYBE make your goals a little less lofty.  Instead of 6 days a week at the gym, commit to putting on your workout shoes for 3 mornings and walking a couple of miles, followed by some body weight exercises.  Change one thing in your diet each week or two and see if it sticks instead eliminating entire food groups.  If whatever it was you committed to in January was just too hard to catch up on if you missed a couple of days, aim to do half as much of it in February and see how that goes.  (Of course, if you hit your goals in January, YAY YOU! Now keep practicing the goals you want as lifetime habits, and increase effort or time a bit).

General monthly instructions are below, including the monthly picture scavenger hunt.

How It Works

The primary purpose of these monthly challenges is to keep track of your daily step goals for the month; though many of us track other things as well, like body weight exercises, sleep, trips to the gym, logging food, etc. This is not a competition to see who can do the most of whatever, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of the monthly total you can hit your goal.

Some might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and others might have a variable goal throughout the week, (and some might even plan days off!) for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = “6k steps a day,” or “not tracking”

Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for the monthly challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.

Suggested Posting Format
1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.
2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved out of the monthly minimum and or monthly total

Picture Scavenger Hunt

This month’s scavenger hunt is free flowing and likely to be VERY VARIED.  Tell a story with words and pictures about where you live - your neighborhood, your town/city.  Maybe just about a particular building, or maybe the founding of the area, or maybe a famous person who lived in or visited or died where you live.  It doesn’t have to be a lot of pictures and doesn’t have to be historical.  Most comic strips are just 3 or 4 panels. But it does have to be pictures you take while walking this month.  From when I did this challenge a couple of years ago:

Baltoscott_0-1611886918956.jpeg

1. What looks like ...

Baltoscott_1-1611886918956.jpeg

2. A well-locked bike ...

Baltoscott_2-1611886918957.jpeg

3. Can be ...

Baltoscott_3-1611886918957.jpeg

4. Just a well-locked bike frame

Moral -- lock goes through frame + wheels!

Posting

Although you certainly don’t have to post daily, you’ll likely stay closer to what you set out to do by updating the thread several times/week

Injury Notice
If you injure yourself during the month and need to scale back due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

True confessions: today I finally took down the last of the Christmas lights (despite my husband saying, ‘might as well leave ‘em up now’! 😂) My excuse? Waiting for the weather to warm up enough to clean the windows. Today was the day. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. 😇

The weather has been horrible, so I'm not getting outdoors much. I'm glad I decided to scale back my goals a little for February. I'm hoping that March will be better.

NEW GOAL Stability work  - 3/10?

I think for March I will need to add a stretching goal.  I just have a hard time keeping track of goals that aren't automatically recorded.  Did a long walk yesterday and caught back up to my pace bunny.  Really nice weather yesterday, today is soggy and rainy but I will take that over ice and snow.

Having a hard time getting moving today.  My "need to " weekend errands and my walking are playing chicken with each other while I sip coffee and wait for motivation to strike.

@Jotex frankly the only reason the outside lights are down is we never got around to putting them up.  And the only reason the inside lights are down is somewhere mid-December we accidentally stopped watering the tree. Usually we are ON it with the tree and can keep it alive for weeks.  But it barely made it to Xmas without being kindling dry.  And when we put stuff away we tend to do all of it as the storage cupboard is really hard to get to and involves moving furniture.

hah...this just popped up and is so me today

Great photo @Ennay  — and I totally understand about the lights. I am not usually so late, but I decided I wanted to clean the windows so had to wait.

Icy roads have gotten in the way of my unicycle ride 4 days this month already, so I'll be at least a day short there. And my weight is up a bit again this week. Also not enough days to hit the monthly sleep goal. February is too dang short!

The weekend weather somewhat cooperated, and I was able to get a fair few steps in.  Though today's totals will only be 1-2" of snow, it's suppose to be a squall with gusty winds.  Hopefully it ends by the end of work and I will be able to get some more steps in.  Definitely planning on working the weights later.

Another snow storm.  I tried yesterday to get take away; glad I didn't try to go walk!  The roads were terrible!  Can't wait for spring and it's more agreeable weather.

Miscounted on my unicycle days last time.  Still can hit my goal if hit the next five days.  Snow is nearly gone (got up to 50F today) and above freezing during daytime and most nights for the next two weeks.  So I should be in good shape on that and the step goal.

It's supposed to get into the 40s today!  And possibly rain.  Least for the morning, I can enjoy some sunlight through the window.  I obviously can't completely catch up today, but I can certainly put in the effort to try!

I have started a supposedly stretch/stability workout and it is a bit much for my ankles and low back, but I managed about half of it yesterday and today and I think I am going to just going to see if I can progress through it.  Although DH says the first half is the harder part so maybe tomorrow I will skip forward to where I have been quitting and try the 2nd half/
