A few of these...Katy Perry and Daft Punk I know from my kids turning me on to them...otherwise playlists are a generational thing. As you get older you tend to go back to the golden moldies of your youth. For recent artists I love Pink, Rhianna, PitBull and Macklemore.

From back in the day give me the power ballads or Motown and I can walk another five miles..."Smoke on the Water" up a really steep hill...DUMDUMDUM DUMDUMDEEDUMMM chugchugchug nothing like it. Or say Southern Rock Boogie...Stevie Ray Vaughn "If the House is a Rockin" Yeah Heyyyyyyyyyyy

My playlist varies, but I like to play the same track at the begining of every workout..... at least for a few weeks or months.  Recently its been 'Jump around' by House of Pain.  Before that it was 'I bet you look good on the dance floor' by the Arctic Monkeys.

I have to admit the tunes I use for my long distance walking workouts do not listen too on daily sit at home and chill days. I do like pop bands, jazz or R/B regular. But I found tunes with some pumping bass motivates my walking stride...

1. Iggy Azalea

2. Kiesza

3. Lindsay Stirling

4. Madonna

5. Sia

6. Ashanti

or flow95.3 FM

and sometimes some old school metal bands help those hard to move days...

7. Black Sabbath etc...

I walk at a 3.5/hr pace and find that the perfect music to coincide with that (and keep me from dropping off) is reggae music.  Some of my favorites: Bob, Ziggy, and Damian Marley, Matisyahu, Tippa Lee and Andrew Wright, Niyorah., Toots and the Maytals...  Great music for anytime and keeps me moving!!!

I've found the same thing. Most of my favourite songs are from the 80's and 90's , although some newer songs have come out that have made it onto my playlists. but it's been a few years since anything's come out that I've liked at all. I think the last album that came out that I bought was Michelle Wright's Strong. (although Reba's got a new single coming out on Tuesday, with an album cfollowing it eventually,s o ... you never know...)

I've got two, well sort of three playlists that I listen to regularly that I find effective for, well, many things. The first two of them I have named after the emotions the evoke in me. The third is my 'Life narrative' playlist; every song on this list says something about my self, my life history, or my philosophy of life.  The first two playlists are named Euphoria, and "Bad mood/Hurting" (depending on whether it's in media player or iTunes). The euphoria playlist has as a criteria for inclusion that the song must have awesome vocals (and/or great lyrics), something that provokes euphoria in me. Typically that is awesome vocals, although on occasion it's the lyrics with merely good vocals. I use it a lot for cycling, or when I need a good pick-me-up. It includes songs like:

I Never Go Around Mirrors. Keith Whitley.
I'll Lie Myself to Sleep. Shelby Lynne
Things Are Tough All Over. Shelby Lynne
How Do I Let Go.  Lisa Brokop
Loving Blind. Clint Black
Where Are You Now. Clint Black.
Hell And High Water.  T. Graham Brown
I Tell it Like it Used to Be. T. Graham Brown
I'm Holding My Own. Lee Roy Parnell
On the Road. Lee Roy Parnell
Love Has No Right. Billy Joe Royal
I'll Pin a Note on Your Pillow. Billy Joe Royal
...
Candle In The Window. Joan Kennedy
Just can't let go.  Joan Kennedy
...
I'm Leaving You For Me. Lisa Brokop
How Far. Martina McBride
Where Would You Be. Martina McBride
If You See Him/If You See Her. Brooks & Dunn/Reba McEntire
Fallin' out of Love. Reba McEntire
The Heart Won't Lie. Reba McEntire (With Vince Gill)
...
My Maria. Brooks & Dunn
That Ain't No Way to Go .Brooks & Dunn
She's Not the Cheatin' Kind. Brooks & Dunn
...
Cry Baby 4:16 Carolyn Dawn Johnson Love & Negotiation Canadian Country
Nothin' Good About Lonely... Carolyn Dawn Johnson
This Crazy Heart of Mine. Charlie Major
Try. Blue Rodeo
Bad Timing. Blue Rodeo
...
Nobody Falls Like A Fool. Earl Thomas Conley
Once In A Blue Moon. Earl Thomas Conley
Lonely Gypsy Wind. Farmer's Daughter
What She's Doing Now. Garth Brooks
The Dance. Garth Brooks
Amarillo By Morning. George Strait
The Cowboy Rides Away. George Strait
My Strongest Weakness. The Judds Live
What Do I Know. Linda Davis
If I Could Live Your Life. Linda Davis

Just to name a few. It is 384 songs long.

My Bad Mood/Hurting playlist (it's also been called 'Evocative', when it was burned onto cds) I use when I am (predicatably) in a bad mood, and need help evoking my feelings and getting them out where I can understand them. I can use it at any time of day or during any activity, walking, cycling, falling asleep. Whatever. THe whole thing is 507 songs long. Some examples from it include:

Ain't That Lonely Yet. Dwight Yoakam
Alibis. Tracy Lawrence
All I Need (Is Not to Need You). Patty Loveless
All The Good Ones Are Gone. Pam Tillis
All Things Considered. Yankee Grey
Almost Goodbye. Mark Chestnutt
Alyssa Lies. Jason Micheal Carroll
Am I Losing You. Ronnie Milsap
Am I the Only One Who Cares. Reba McEntire
Amarillo. Kathy Mattea
And Still. Reba McEntire
Anita Got Married. Duane Steele
Anymore. Travis Tritt
Anything's Better Than Feeling The Blues. Martina McBride
Ashes. Martina McBride
...
Autumn's Not That Cold. Lorrie Morgan
Baby Don't Cry. One Horse Blue
Baby's Gone Blues. Patty Loveless
Baby's Gone Blues. Reba McEntire
Baby's Gone Blues. Shelby Lynne
Back in Your Arms Again. Lorrie Morgan
Bad Day for Trains. Patricia Conroy
Better As a Memory. Kenny Chesney
Between An Old Memory And Me. Keith Whitley

My Life Narrative playlist incluses songs from both of the other two playlists as well as some that are not on either.  It is 288 songs long. Most of them are from the 80's and 90's but there are some like Michelle Wright's Strong, Martina McBride's I'm Gonna Love You Through It, and Sara Evans' A Little Bit Stronger that are from the last couple years and are just too good not to include. I did notice that the further forward in time (the closer to the present day) the songs come, the more positive they become.  It is definitely NOT a playlist meant to be played on repeat. but now that I have an ipod (it's only been about 2 years, since I finished my 2nd B.A. , this one an Honours degree - it was a grad present), I play it on repeat all the time, and it DEFINITELY sounds weird juxtuposing Eddy Arnold's Make the World Go Away, with Michelle Wright's Strong

Two of my favorite albums for walking are a Roy Orbison album and a Hank Williams,Jr.  album, "Old School".  I do much better with music I love.  LOL.  My favorite song on HWJ's album is "Never Kick A Cow Turd On A Hot Day".  Hehehe.

I could wrap my head around that list.  Sometimes although I like the fast pace of the new songs, it would be nice to hear some oldie stuff!

I tend to have different playlists for cardio and strength training.  For cardio I typically go with pop/dance/club music and rock music for strength training.

I use Spotify and they have a really awesome section that actually puts your music to the speed of your run or activity. You can pick the type of music you want and it goes from there fluctuating depending on how fast your activity is 🙂
