Have always bought Precor treadmills - they last for years and are top of the line!

there are a LOT of low use models for sale on e-bay, craigslist, etc.   Any brand/model treadmill that gets used in a gym will be more than durable enough for even the heaviest home use. Have a look next time you are in your local gym.

It also depends on whether you plan on running or walking.  If you want to run on an incline you might want to look for a 4 horse power motor,  for just walking on a reasonably flat surface 2.5 hp will be ok.

My husband and I purchased a Horizon T401, which can be purchased in the $400-$700 range.  We got ours in 2009 on a clearance sale at a local sporting goods store and managed to pick ours up for 50% off.  We put about 30-40 miles on it per week, and we have never had a problem with it.  It has a 275 lb weight limit, is 2.75 HP, has a power incline of 1-10% and a speed range of 0.5-10MPH.  It is a good basic treadmill.  No matter what brand of treadmill you purchase, just be sure to maintain your treadmill per the instructions  in the manual in order to get good, reliable, and long-term use of it.

I would browse on treadmilldoctor.com to get familiar with some good brands, and then watch craigslist for a deal on a used one.

Like was mentioned above, it matters if you'll run or not.  I don't run on mine and it has a really long belt which I wish was a little shorter.

I love having incline.  No need to run when you can do incline walking!

However, my understanding is Fitbit won't give you credit (in terms of calories burned and VAM's earned) for the extra effort caused by incline walking.

I don't think there is a "best" treadmill, it all depends on what you want it to do. We have an older basic treadmill that is used for days when it is too rainy or cold to walk outside. I don't want it to do anything fancy like chart routes, display maps or videos, etc., I just want it to make me walk. It has a LCD display of distance, speed, incline and time. It also displays calories burned, but that is totally useless since it doesn't ask for age, height, weight, or sex.  So, for me, this was the best one, and it cost less than $200, which made it even better.

But, I have a good friend who bought a top of the line treadmill that does everything but make coffee. He loves to show it off when anyone visits his home. Only problem is that he never uses it, so it was basically a waste of money.
