I’ve been trying to find out how and when (= what time of the day) Fitbit determines your resting heart rate for the day. In the HR FAQ, Fitbit says: "We use your heart rate data from when you’re awake and asleep to estimate your resting heart rate."
I’ve indeed noticed the HR when asleep is not sufficient, as the grey "xx bpm resting" text in the mobile app is empty when waking up in the morning. As far as I can tell, it stays empty until some point in the morning when Fitbit "decides" it has gathered enough HR information and it "locks" the RHR for the day. Whatever happens during the remaining part of the day won’t change the RHR. Have you made similar observations?
On a related item, have you seen the small discrepancy between the web-based Dashboard and the mobile app I reported in this topic on the Dashboard help forum?

@Dominique Hi again, there has always been a +1 bpm increase on the Web Dashboard compared to my Sony Android RHR graph.
Lately I feel it is locked in, but a few weeks ago I noticed the RHR changed during the day.
When I first awake. the Android jumps a few points above yesterdays RHR and then within about 30 minutes settles down again.
Here is the definition I received from Fitbit Support when I tried to get their explanation of the RHR when I tried to analyse the effort for the RHR.
"our definition will be the same one as the Basal Metabolic rate (BMR), witch it is is the amount of energy expended while at rest in a neutrally temperate environment, in the post-absorptive state (meaning that the digestive system is inactive, which requires about twelve hours of fasting).
