II don't know which fitbit you have but presuming it is one with heart rate monitoring

According to https://help.fitbit.com/articles/en_US/Help_article/1379

"Tour Fitbit tracker recognizes and awards active minutes when the activity you're doing is more strenuous than regular walking, which includes everything from a brisk walk to a cardio workout or run."

"To stay in line with the Center for Disease Control's (CDC’s) “10 minutes at a time is fine” concept, minutes are only awarded after 10 minutes of continuous moderate-to-intense activity. You can view the CDC’s recommendations on the CDC website

If the same activity gives you active minutes one day and fewer active minutes the next day, remember that the intensity of exercise is key. Often what seems like the exact same amount of effort over the same distance in fact differs slightly enough to change your active minutes total."

This may be completely wrong, maybe your tracker just isn't working but if it is my guess is that while you were there, you were never pushing your heart rate above what it is normally at for walking for more than 10 minutes. This isn't necessarily surprising, or necessarily bad if you are new to exercise. Starting off with relatively gentle exercise and making time for exercise is a great place to start and it is better for you to develop the gym habit gently then ramp up than it is to push yourself too hard and burn out and stop going. You're still burning more calories and improving your muscles and cardio health by low activity over no activity. I see this at the gym a lot, people leaning on the stairmill, walking slowly on the treadmill, etc as I said, start gently but do plan on pushing yourself just a little more each time.

If your fitbit has heart rate tracking, set it into a workout mode on your next trip to the gym and watch your heart rate. If not get yourself a cheap heart rate monitor (the chest strap type is most accurate and you can get them for about $20). Read up on heart rates and "heart rate zones" and start pushing yourself into a higher heart rate for longer periods of time each time you go to the gym. My heart rate does drop when I'm lifting weights but since I do a good warmup beforehand and try to lift intensely it never goes all the way back down to its everyday walking around rate while I'm at the gym.

did you set your fitbit to record exercise?  For the gym I'd select the "Workout" option, push the button to start it and push the button again when done.  Alternatively, so you have your settings set to automatically recognize a workout?

For assistance, it is helpful if you identify which tracker you are using.  HR vs. Non-HR will have very different outcomes.

Best way to analyze it is to look at graphs for calories burned and heart rate to see if they are elevated.

Before posting, re-read to see if it would make sense to someone else not looking at your Fitbit or phone.

For anything of that nature, I use the "Workout" in the exercise shortcuts.  That way I can lump them all into one activity.

If it did not track an active minute, then either your tracker wasn't secured properly or you weren't putting in enough effort to count.
