Accepted Solutions

Add the activity of shoveling snow, and then it should show as two hours of activity.

Right.  Your Fitbit doesn't detect resistance activity, like lifting heavy objects.  It's a pedometer, basically.

Not necessarily. I often add downhill skiing +/- 8 hrs as an activity. Even though the force counts my pole plants as steps (between 13k-17k) it still tells me I have only two minutes of active time.

All I know is that when I entered snow shoveling it all showed up as active minutes.

I tried to add snow shoveling as a logged activity but it only had snow shoeing as an option.

You have to create your own activity, using the following web site or another similar one that is trustworty to figure out an estimate of your caloric burn:

Hope this helps. Have a nice day.

All I get is Snowshoeing too! So it looks like there are two versions floating around.

Oh, that's scary.

You know they have to have a few web servers spread around the country likely - but that implies they are not all running the same database at the least.

Gee, wonder what else isn't matched up.

But does make for interesting troubleshooting then for syncing issues with MFP.

How many and where are their web servers.

How many app servers for both, and where are they located?

All wireless carriers dump you out to the internet pipes as fast as possible in case they don't need to carry your traffic.

Very interesting discovery.

@HeybalesIt shows on your Activity list because you have used it before and it would have been in your favourites.

Here is a recent list of the activities after the cull..

Ahhhh, good one, I had used it in the past, just not this year yet.

Since they pulled it - do you think the associated calorie burn would remain for prior used item, or would it do something with my manually entered calorie burn.

@HeybalesTry it and delete it afterwards, no harm done. This calculator can help you convert steps to calories because the effort is given in steps. Therefore 2 hours of Snow Shovelling for me equates to 550 calories/hour by using the walking steps option, deleting and using the calories.

Oh, I'd just use the full-blown METS database if I didn't have a HRM reading for comparison.

It was over a 4mph walk if I remember, decent amount more.

@HeybalesSimilar, my conversion came to 8kmh or 4.9mph and it my age I can only dream of that speed and "feel" the Perceived Effort of my younger days. Similar to some of my heavy gardening measuring with the Polar HRM..

You have the link for the METS data base, but here is the link for others.

All good information for the Fitbitters....

Have a great day in the cold, 80oF (26oC) here today heading towards 95oF (35oC) by the weekend..

I'm sure when you are lifting and moving around 25 lb prize squashes it can get a tad heavy!

@HeybalesAppreciate the dialogue, not squashes the other day but maintaining our lawn with turf plugs and digging for 121 minutes and the Polar and the Surge, the average HR was 94 and 93 respectively but the calories were different.

I then asked the question, "What Vo2max is used in Fitbit calculations ?", because that really affects my calorie outcome.

I don't worry too much, the tape measure and scales are my measure.
