Just over a week ago, I had a chance to participate in an ultramarathon called A Race For The Ages. The idea was very simple. Whatever your age is, that's how many hours you had to race and see how many miles you can do. For example, a 61-year old like myself had 61 hours at his disposal.
Here is a small but inspiring sampling of the results that I witnessed first hand.
*an 87 year old man walked 109 miles in his 87 hours
*an 82 year old woman did 153 miles
*a 75 year old woman completed 170 miles
*and a 74 year old man set a course record with 230 miles, averaging roughly 75 miles a day for just over three full days
All this was done on a one-mile loop course with extremely warm daytime temperatures and little shade.
Just because you're old, doesn't mean you have to stop trying. Maybe your goal is a more modest 10k step per day average. I just want to remind people that it is never too late to start (unless your doctor told you otherwise). These are just a handful of people who ignored someone that probably told them "you're too old to...".

Oh @Ronlaub !!! I'm glad you posted again about this race. My goodness, but it proves that as we get older, we just do things more wisely. Incredible stepping! Thanks for the update.

@Ronlaub- that made my day 🙂
I've been doing this crazy steppin stuff for about 3 1/2 years now and I feel great. I don't think I'm in the best shape of my life but I can say I'm in much better shape than I was 4 years ago and I feel much healthier. I can't honestly know how much I'll be walking if and when I make it into my 80's but I plan on doing as much as I can for as long as I can!
Hope you don't mind, I copied/pasted your post to my Facebook Steppin group for everyone to read. I love reading things like this 🙂

@GSaldiveri don't mind you sharing at all. I was so inspired by so many people in this race and I hope others will be, too. I could tell so many stories from the five ultra races that I've done about others that I've had the honor to meet. A WWII vet in his 90's, people that have overcome incredible adversity to race again and so much more. I'm 10 weeks away from my next ultra and can't wait.
