Definition-- basal metabolism the minimal energy expended to maintain respiration, circulation, peristalsis, muscle tonus, body temperature, glandular activity, and the other vegetative functions of the body.
Call those bonus calories! I usually wear my fitbit on my bra , my waistband, or in my pocket for the best accuracy.

Am I doing something wrong or do you have to do something before you start? Many thanks

It will count some steps but it wont be accurate.
Your stride is different on the threadmill.
Bike no its not step based. I do put it on my shoe to capture some but again is not accurate

I have used at least 4 other pedometers and found Fitbit to be "top of the line"! The most accurate!
And, do join a "community group" if you are even remotely competitive. I have doubled to tripled my daily steps and
find that I can't stand it if I take a day off! Others get too far ahead of me, then I feel I must catch up and regain my position 🙂
Have fun and BE HEALTHY!

I wear my Fitbit Zip at the 11 o'clock position on my shorts when I use my recumbent bike. I found that it does record acivity (maybe my hips and waist are moving enough) but I still input my manual log data for the bike ride. I use Map My Fitness from TomtTom (now Under Armour) auto calculated calories data for the Fitbit log entry.
Of course, miles on a bike don't equate 1:1 for steps or miles walking/running, but I find for a 30 minute 7.7 mile (around 15 mph speed) that I get around 8 K steps and around 480 calories. VAM and mileage is also recorded. But, if you forget and don't wear your device, simply inputing the data won't truly reflect your effort.

For the treadmill I enter the time, distance and calories manually that the treadmill puts out.

For the bike, I use an average of my heart rate monitor and a fitness site I use; I enter the average into fitbit.
