Did you mean:

false steps

I received my Fitbit 2 yesterday and charged it. After playing around with it a few minutes I took it off. Today I get an e-mail about earning my first "boat shoe" saying I walked my first 5,000 steps??? It sat on the table the whole time!!! Kinda rethinking my decision about my purchase.

I had just received it in the mail yesterday, charged it and decided to wait until today to read up on the features and usage when I discovered the step count. WOW, didn't realize this forum was for people to attack or berate others. If OTOH you were trying to be funny, you failed.

You are right.  Comments about sitting on the table, etc  made by a moderator (who should know better) are totally uncalled for.  Enjoy you FitBit.

There are all kind of situations where you will get "false steps". See this other topic for some examples. If you are going to spend all your days "sitting on the table", maybe a fitness tracker won’t be of much use to you. If, OTOH, you actually try your best to be more active, whatever "fake steps" you may get from various static activities will be more than offset by the "real steps" you’ll be taking.

As a moderator I think you’ve crossed the line with regards to your inappropriate and uncalled for comments.

You didn't say why it was sitting on the table all day.  The implication is that you didn't bother to put it on and the poster was correct in saying it isn't going to be motivating sitting on the table.  Most of us have been excited to get it and wore it the first day.

How so?  I think it a valid comment to someone who gets a new fitbit and lets it sit on the table all day.

It seems as though my innocent question has opened a floodgate for people to post negative comments. YES I was excited to receive my Fitbit but felt there was a lot to learn. NO it did not sit on a table all day, my mail arrives at 4 pm and after charging it I had other obligations to attend to. (I have a family that expects dinner every night, can you imagine the nerve!) so I did not continue reading up on it. Can we PLEASE stop debating my intentions or commitment to getting fit. I am new to Fitbit and was simply reaching out for support. Let's put this to rest and try to be kind to one another.

@kateyes,

On the 5,000 steps, sometimes it happens. I've never heard a good explanation.

Fitbits are expensive. Anyone who buys one is probably committed. Hope you enjoy yours.

Hi Kateyes  !!!

Sometimes a post doesn't  quite come off the way it was intended to, sometimes (and i'm guilty of this at times) it can be a little snarky and sometimes it can be judgemental and for that there is no excuse .   Unfortunately I see a  few in the judgmental category floating around here ... this is not the norm at all so I'm hoping you stick around .

Having said all that, welcome to the fitbit community and best of luck with the new fitbit .

Sounds more like continental drift to me ... of quartz you may be right and my answer might be faulty.

Congratulations !!!  Based on little real information and some incorrect assumptions you managed a fairly judgmental post here that might even lean towards arrogance.   In any event you sure know how to say "welcome to the fitbit community" to someone who just logged on a day ago . (yes that was meant to be sarcastic)

It's an unusual glitch. I've heard of it happening, but haven't experienced it myself. Most of the people that I've read about it happening to said they woke up to 5k steps on their fitbit one day and it didn't happen again.
