Follow the instructions in the Help guide here though while it says to walk at least 20 steps, my preference is to use a much longer known distance.  Such as a high school track which is typically either 400 meters or 440 yards (depending on its age).

I agree with Doug it makes more sense to use a longer known distance.

Although Fitbit provides you with two separate fields for your walking stride length and for your running stride length, it is important to note Fitbit doesn't necessarily have the same understanding of what constitutes walking and what constitutes running as you. For instance, my brisk walking (6.5-7.2 km/h) is considered as running by Fitbit: if I want distances (and calories) to be calculated correctly when walking at that speed, I therefore need to enter my walking stride length in the field intended for the running stride length. This in turn means that I'm being short-changed (in terms of distances and calories burned) when actually running.

@distance- Go to Settings, go down the page a bit and under Body Info you will find two fields to adjust your stride length for walking and running.
