Did you mean:

how do i know my FITBIT is counting steps accurately?

my daughter and I are the same height and weight.  Yet i seem to accumulate more steps walking the same distance.

Either her FITBIT is not calculating accurately or mine is over compensating.

Thats not true. You both have different strides. They will never match. Does not make any difference as to height and weight. You still have different gaits

Take a test and Not knowing  which device you use. Look at the steps before you start.

Walk 100 Steps and look to see what your fitbit reads after.

Have your daughter do the same

I'd have one person wear both Fitbits and compare the number of steps while walking a couple of miles. Real Fitbit addicts will walk with the person so they aren't cheating.

Personally, I have started a business as a Fitbit walker. I wear 25 Fitbits at a time to get steps for people who want them.

To know whether it is counting steps okay, stand still, look at your fitbit step count (push the timer button if you have one), take a step and count it. 1 footfall or weight shift = 1 step. Take 99 more and count them (I do it outloud to keep myself focussed). When finished stand still for a few seconds, then look at your timer or fitbit display. How many steps were counted? My Fitbit One slightly undercounts my steps, but my distance and calorie burn seem fine anyway. I did calibrate my walking and running strides. It may be that one of you has a longer or shorter stride than the other. This is not really about your height or leg length. It is the ground you cover with each step. I posted a tutorial on my blog about how I measured and calibrated mine: http://slysamgettingfit.blogspot.com/2014/08/how-to-calibrate-your-fitbit-stride.html

it seems fitbit counts any body movement as a step. I noticed while driving a car and stopping by my mailbox to get the mail thru the window. 20 steps were added while I was doing that.
