The inbuilt 3D Accelerometer detects speed of your step and then if you are walking very rapidly, jogging  or running it will multiply your steps for that 60 second interval by your running stride. Fitbit always calculates in 60 second intervals so you can have a mixture of walking and running stride over a time period.
