According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, both activities are listed as "vigorous" and typically burn more than 7 calories per minute. A recent study conducted at the University of Wisconsin revealed that intense kayaking may burn up to 339 calories every 20 minutes. However, most experts agree that rowing burns substantially more calories than kayaking. Recreational kayaking is considered a moderate activity by the CDC, and will burn about 3.5 to 7 calories per minute. Of course, your current weight, etc. will determine how many calories you as an individual will burn. Since Fitbit measures activity by movement, it may not accurately reflect how much "work" you are actually doing during these activities but should give you a good idea.

Since rowing is not a step based activity, and fitbits are step based trackers, it is better manually entered in the log activity section - search terms canoe, kayak or rowing will probably give you a selection of intensities to choose from.
Hope this helps

To add any exercise simply type it in and create it under Activities. Choices pop up you can use one of those or create your own. To track your caloric burn add the time you begin the exercise and then the amount of time you activily participated in it. Some options allow distance as a choice as well. Enter Log and it will calculate the approximate calories and enter it on your daily activity log. Hope this helps!
