Is there any need/benefit to logging sports like these separately if my flex is already tracking the steps?

Maybe, maybe not. I think it would actually do okay with basketball and soccer. My One does well with walking, jogging, skipping, lateral movements, hopping, jumping, etc. It might even be a little more accurate than the exercise database since these sports can be very start/stop and it would depnd how much time you actually spend playing. The exercise database entry would probably be fine as well, it would put it in the right ballpark for someone of your weight on average. I tend to just let my One track recreational activities/sports on it's own (if it involves enough steps and both basketball and soccer do). You could run the activity timer during a game (same as sleep timing), then when you sync your fitbit there will be an activity record in the activity log that shows various fitit stats for that activity including your steps, distance, floors, calorie burn estimate, minute by minute breakdown, etc. You could compare your calorie burn to what the exercise database would have credited you for. And also check whether you earned any very active minutes after you sync. Very active minutes are a good sign if it credits you for them whn you do vigorous activity, it is a good sign if the activity level sort of matches your effort (light, moderate, and very active).
