I would think that a step goal for weight loss will change over time. I have found that as my weight went down my step goal increased due to my fitness level improvement. What is important is that you do not start out to fast or do to much causing yourself an injury. A begining place would also be one that is directly tied to your current fitness level. Lots of folks strive to hit 10,000 steps daily. I would recomend that you talk/plan with you health care professional before making any goal.

Another way to start is to wear your tracker for a couple days and just do what you have been doing to set the base you are starting from. Then aim to increase your daily steps by 1000 (or 500 or whatever) every week or two until you have reached 10,000 steps a day. The 10,000/day is what Dr Oz and the U.S. Council on Fitness (or whatever) recommend.

Your question though is, how many steps to lose weight. The answer is, as many as it takes so you burn more calories than you eat. Basically, you lose weight in the kitchen, you maintain (or achieve) fitness with exercise.

Good luck

Something I did was gradually increase my daily and weekly goal. I'm not so good with numbers so I copied the goal of someone who usually averages two or three people ahead of me on my friend list.

Your profile shows you have been using your Fitbit for about a week, and you have been averaging about 12,000 steps for the past few days. Do you feel it is a sustainable level over time, given your current physical shape, your time constraints etc.? You do not have to reach your daily goal every day, think more of a weekly goal, to allow for some flexibility. As @whome said, exercise is only a (small) part of the weight loss equation, you need to get the eating part right. And I'll add steps are only part of the exercise equation: you'd also want to include other kind of activities, like some strength training. And fat loss would be a better term than weight loss: you'd want to minimise muscle loss during your weight loss.
