I just logged in spaghetti sauce, usually Ragu, and never payed attention before, but it is loaded with sodium. Does anyone know of one that isn't so high in sodium. I love the Barillo wheat spaghetti noodles, but the sauce shoots up the sodium way to high 😞
Thanks, Sheri

Its best to make your own, then you know exactly whats in it. And easy too! And way tastier. Make a big batch and freeze it. For extra vegetables and flavor I throw some carrots in a food proseceor and add it to the sauce. Amazing!

Yeah you would be suprised at how much sugar is added to those sauces. And my girlfriend read somewhere that canned tomatoes are the worst because they go thorugh some sort of chemical change during the process. Dont quote me on that though lol.
Carrots will add sweetness and some balsamic vinegar will add some acidity. Adjust to taste.

Trader Joe's Marinara does ot have all the added sugar and salt. If you wnat a store-bought, it is one of your best bets.

Trader Giotto's (aka Trader Joe's). Organic Marinara Sauce No Salt Added (26 oz.). Sodium is 35 mg per serving. Serving size is 1/2 cup. Bottle/jar has 6 servings per container. So, if you use the whole jar...that's just 210 mg. Can't beat that. And, it tastes good. I have abandoned ALL other ready made pasta sauces (gravy to me!) because of their high NaCl content. Made lasagna with it and not one person complained of 'missing' sodium. Sorry, I don't remember the price but I don't remember being shocked by its price. I believe it is in line with all other pasta sauces. Try it.

It's great to make your own using tomatoes, it's tastier, healthy, fresh and easy. I just roughly chop them and throw them in a pan with some onion, garlic, chilli powder and some finely chopped anchovy for depth of flavour, cook for about 5 mins until soft and add some water if necessary. Shop bought sauces are also so processed, and have addiives to increase shelf life... fresh is best and you control what goes in there.

My favorite favorite favorite sauce is Newman's Own Organic Marinara. Not only is it low in sodium and sugar, but it's for a great cause! All the profits go to charity, like the SeriousFun Network (which is a group of camps across the world that kids with life-threatening illnesses can go to for free! I've been four times and had the time of my life!). Anyways. I might be biased, as I try to buy Newman's as much as possible, but I really think that their product is great. I also love love love their salsa and have been eating it since I was a little kid.

Making your own is SUPER easy. I can't even remember the last time I used a jar of sauce. My husband has made his own in the 3 1/2 years we've been married and I couldn't imagine going back to jar sauce, it just isn't the same.

I agree with everyone that making your own is best. I've found that we enjoy homemade more anyways as it won't have onions (which my hubby and I hate), and is about 1/8th of the price.
If I just want a quick sauce, I just mix some passata (crushed, and strained tomato sauce) with tomato paste (to thicken) and some garlic powder, and herbs. It takes a minute to make and is pretty much only veggies. If I have more time, I'll peel a carrot and blend it with the sauce. This makes it a bit sweeter, adds more veg, and thickens the sauce as well. Neither take much time, are super cheap, and tastes good. There is no added salt, sugar, or anything else. I hope that helps!

Making your own is the best way to go.
Here's my recipe: chop 1 golden onion, 1 purple onion, 3 cloves of garlic. Brown them on some olive oil. Add finely chopped celery and carrots, cook until soft. Add ground beef and brown it, add some thyme, oregano and a tbsp of worchestershire sauce. Take out the meat from the pot and add a bit more olive oil; add about 4 ripe peeled tomatoes and about a cup of low sodium broth (or 3/4 broth 1/4 red wine), make sure to scrape the bottom of the pot. Bring to a boil and let water evaporate a bit. When boiling, mash the tomatoes, add a tbsp of tomato paste and the meat + veggies, add wine or broth if necessary. Bring to a boil again and add a pinch of sugar, salt and pepper.
Enjoy!
