Foods to eat while you're working

I may be going back to work within the next week or so, and I need to figure out food ideas that I can leave in my car if I feel the need to snack on something. My job will be delivering pizzas, so I'll be sitting in my car a portion of my time working. I can make up a basket, keep it in my car, and grab things when I need it.

I use small containers and portion out dried fruit, nuts, trail mix, etc. in 100 calorie packs.  You could also take cut veggies and an apple.  They'll keep pretty well and you can grab and snack on.  If you're trying to replace a meal while you're working add some beef jerky.  Since I'm assuming that you can use the bathroom every time you go in to pick up the pizzas also remember to take plenty of water with you.  I have a wide-mouthed water bottle (work gave them out) that I can toss a couple of ice cubes in to keep it cool.

Wonderful ideas! I recently found a trail mix that I have to try: plain almonds, blueberries, and coconut flakes. Some other ideas could include pretzels, green beans, baby carrots, perhaps some sort of whole grain crackers. As A_Lurker suggested it'll be good to prepare them in containers or sandwich bags. Beef jerky is a great option because of its protein content and it's not very messy.

Instead of Beef Snacks, you might want to try Turkey instead.  While both are high in Sodium, the Turkey is a little less in Fat.  I try to avoid these but every so often, I allow myself the luxury!

I like Old Wisconsin's Turkey "Sausage" Snack Stick.  It's 16 grams with 3g Fat, 1g Saturated Fat, 160mg Sodium, and 4g Protein.

I also like "Perkey Jerky" occasionally.  For 28 grams, it's .5g Fat, 0 Saturated Fat, 350mg Sodium (Ouch!), and 10g Protein.

For 28 grams of Tillamook Turkey Jerky, there's 2g Fat, .5g Saturated Fat, 490mg Sodium, and 9g Protein.  (Different Brands have different Counts, so always check the Label.  I'm a big Fan of Tillamook's Products but the Label tells me that I can do better elsewhere.)

For 28 grams, of Tillamook Old Fashioned Beef Jerky, there's 1.5g Fat, .5g Saturated Fat, 520mg Sodium, and 10g Protein.

Some of my personal favorite snacks:

  • nuts
  • fruit - fresh or dried
  • bars (like Clif - not super healthy, but I like them and they're convenient)
  • Crackers and hummus (Mary's Gone Crackers are my fav and you can buy hummus in little snack packs)
  • Air popped popcorn (buy kernels, put in paper brown bag, microwave, then pack)
  • Oven roasted chickpeas (crunchy like corn nuts - tons of easy recipes online)
  • English muffin with almond butter
  • Banana and almond butter (individual pack - can squeeze onto banana. Weird, but amazing!)

Healthy foods/foods that are good for you are probably best. As much as chips and other snacks are tasty, they aren't that good for you, especially if you aren't getting too too much exercise from driving around. Try having some low calorie but high volume snacks, like nuts or raisins. Trail mixes are pretty good too.

Don't fall into the trap of thinking that "healthy" and low calorie are the same thing.  Dried fruits are often high in sugar and sometimes in saturated fats (think banana chips)  Nuts and nut butters are high in fat and calories and must be weighed into a portion if you want accuracy.  If weight is not a concern disregard but if you are trying to manage your weight be wary of calorie counts.

I tend to start eating some chocolate cookies or potato chips while I'm on the car, they help me stay awake and positive. I just get really frustrated after spending too much time inside my car. Some sandwiches would also be nice to get a variety of flavors.

Everyone has some great ideas! I will have to come back here whenever I'm getting my snacks for the week from the supermarket.
