Hypothyroidism trying to go gluten free

For years I've struggled making adjustments to live with my Hypo Thyroid condition but also try to improve it from what I put into my body. Has anyone out there with hypothyroid ever tried cutting gluten. My doctor has tested me for sensitivities and nothing has come up but I still get so bloated / sick when I eat wheat products. I've cut it out almost completely for four weeks and have noticed a huge difference with my IBS and other stomach problems. Has anybody else tried this before?

Hi @jp18
There are several ways to react to gluten. Some people suffer celiac disease. Others react to gluten with increasing inflammation throughout the body. I do not have a thyroid problem but at my doctor's suggestion, I went gluten free to see if it would help control inflammation throughout my body. It did! Within three weeks, I was able to discontinue Celebrex, an arthritis drug. I am still gluten free. Subsequent blood tests showed a big drop in my body's inflammation.

Listen to what your body is telling you. If you feel better off gluten, then stay off it.

One last suggestion. Google "gluten, hypothyroidism". I did, There is a wealth of information out there, including personal testimonials on the success people with hypothyroidism have had cutting out gluten.

I also suffer from hypothyroidism and have been wondering about gluten. I think as others have said, you should listen to your body. Keep us posted as to how it goes!

Hypothyroid here too. I worry less about gluten than grain in general. I'll have rice, rice noodles, wheat or oats a couple of times a week, no more than that. The rest of the time I eat fruit and veg in super simple combinations. This works really well for me.

I am hypothyroid and went off gluten in January as part of the Blood Sugar Solution diet to lower my insulin resistance. I have lost 35 pounds. My diarreha has disappeared. I have been able to go offf my antidepressants that I have taken for 25 years. I have tons more energy and now I walk 12,000 to 14,000 steps a day. It has changed my life. I never want to eat gluten again because I don't ever want to feel that way again.

Good luck with your journey.
