Mediterranean diet has benefits in old age, study finds

We knew the Mediterranean way of eating was healthy (except for those who believe olive oil is bad for you), but now it turns out to be the case especially for us older folks:

The study referred to in the article is titled "Mediterranean diet and mortality in the elderly: a prospective cohort study and a meta-analysis."

The seminal work studying the Mediterranian Diet was the Lyon Heart study done on a group of 605 people who had already suffered a major cardiac event. This group was split into two approximately equal sized groups.

There were 44 events in the prudent diet group and 14 in the Mediterranian diet group. That seems like a pretty good result until you compare it to Dr. Esselstyn's results of only one minor event out of 178 patients.

The only good thing that can be said about the Mediterranian diet is that it's less deadly than the Standard American diet.

the only good thing.........?

why is that the 'only' good thing? the focus of the med diet, is healthy fats, lots of fruit, veg - homemade cooking, eating slowly, portion control (people don't eat massive portions) and including more fish. What's not to like about all that? Sure it's not a body builders diet, but its a diet suited to the masses.

Not all diets suit all people, but by and large the mediterranean diet would suit most, and most would live a healthy life on it. And dietary test like the ones below - there are just too many variables, did the people smoke, did they drink alcohol, how stressful are their jobs, did they lose a loved one during the trial, what were their age? These are people who already had heart disease where there lifestyle had contributed to them having a major cardiac event, and some people are just unlucky - if diet was solely responsible for our health why would 2 year old's get cancer and my Grandma live to 86yrs old despite smoking 20-30 cigarettes a day, (she didn't get cancer, she just died of old age). Trials and tests can only tell you so much.

At the end of the day it boils down to one thing: Common sense.

The Mediterranean diet is the most common sense way of eating out there. It's not designed to get you to a size 0, it's a diet in the sense of how you should eat always, not something you do for a few months to lose weight. Although you can calorie count while eating a Mediterranean diet.

It reflects most closely how humans were designed to eat; some fish, some nuts, some greens, some fruit, maybe some meat if you're lucky - and walking, walking for miles each day, pick your veg and cook it at home, eat regularly, eat slowly, eat with your people, slow down, drink some red wine (but don't be drunk) enjoy your food and live, and live well.

There is so much right with it.
