Since I hate the idea of "diet food" I made a list of the fruits/veg/condiments I like and then looked for recipes with healthier protein and carb sources than my usual Southern Fried favs. There are some great recipes out there that are lighter versions of the food I love and I don't have to eat things I hate (like beets-ugh). I am not the most adventurous and by sticking with what I know and love (just healthier) I find I am not feeling deprived. I have a huge sweet tooth and have great recipes that allow me to indulge my sweet tooth (and they are single servings) that are helping me stay on track. I know it is a pain but keeping a food diary (online or on paper) also helps as it makes me more aware of what I am eating as I go thru my day so I don't get a shock when it is dinner time and I have already consumed over my allotted 1200-1500 cal limit. Hope this helps 🙂

Depends on your version of "sensible."
I usually suggest adding in some cheese or avocado, which are higher in calories but have some good nutrients. Some people don't want to up their fat intake, though. They worry eating fat will make them fat, which is just not true.
