Hi everyone and Merry Christmas! Just got my Fitbit Force and am wondering what's the best protein for breakfast? I make my own breakfast smoothies during the week and usually add protein powder to them. Right now I have Pure Protein Whey 25 mg, I bought this from Walmart. Is one protein powder better than the other?

Different people absorb protein differently. Some can't handle whey protein very well, but from a generic nutrition pov whey protein is the most efficient if you are working out. You do have to be careful to not take too much at once as it can upset your stomach and you can't really absorb more than about 20g at a time (about every 2 hours), so if your powder has more than 20g per serving you are basically wasting it. Whey protein is also more useful if you a guy and want to hypertrophy your muscles (bullk up). If you are a woman, whey can help you bulk but you won't bulk any more than you would naturally. And if you are simply trying to make sure you get enough protein overall, whey won't hurt.

It is best to add variety to your diet. Not saying protein powder is "bad" but it is so very processed... (Not sure I would take a chance on a Walmart brand protein powder, but that's just my bias, working in an organic grocery store.) As a society, we've gotten so focused on supplements that we forget real food can provide what we need for far less $$$...
Try cooking eggs once or twice a week (I will break two and ditch the yolk from one, to reduce the fat). Greek yogurt is protein packed and has a decent amount of calcium as well. You can buy it with fruit in it already or buy plain low or non-fat and stir in some fresh/frozen fruit or fruit spread so you control the added sugars.
And nobody said that you can't eat sliced lean turkey for breakfast. Or even tuna or other fish. Both being good and varied protein sources. Tuna will provide those essential Omega's. A handful of raw walnuts or other nuts are yet another option...

Whole foods is always best but if you going to use a powder I always find something with a full amino acid profile. Thats what protein is needed for its amino acids. I personally like whey or pea proteins. It also depends on what you are doing after. Is this to fuel workout or is it just to get the day started. Fats are just as important in your breakfast for brain functionality. Each body is different so my only suggestion is watch the sugar content. Some of the protein powders are super high in sugar. First meal is important because you are coming out of overnight fasting.

whey protien isolates are quickly absorbed unlike standard whey protiens, good for the morning or afer a workout when your body needs it asap! turkey bacon is a good choice for breakfast when you are looking for `breakfast food``

Check out Gold Standard Whey Protein by Optimum Nutrition. This contains the whey protein isolates which are good. Gold Standard contains 5.5 grams of Branched Chain Amino Acids (BCAA's), 24 grams of protein per serving, 1 gram of sugars, 1 gram of fat. For the price, I don't think you can beat it. You can get 5lbs. for around $53 on Amazon (free shipping). I've looked at the Walmart and Costco products to save $$$, but they just are not nearly as good. I have seen good increases in my strength and endurance with this protein. I have added about 10 lbs of muscle in the last year.
Remember... protein powder is a supplement, and not a meal replacement.

hey there!
My favorite in the morning is cottage cheese! (or anytime of day for that matter)
This morning I had a half cup of cottage cheese (90 calories, 14g of protein) with a piece of ezekiel sesame toast - quick, easy, tasty, and kept me full for 4 hours - grand total of 170 cals and 18g protein

Ever check the ingredients in turkey bacon? UGH! And it's more procesed than normal bacon and many turkey bacons have move sodium than turkey bacon. Stick w/ whey protein that has no sugar, eggs, cottage cheese (2%), no fat Greek yogurt, plain or vanilla...always add your own fruits to avoid high fructose corn syrup!

I have the Whey Isolate pure protein from Walmart, also. The only thing I dont really like about it is the taste, I prefer AMP from GNC. As for breakfast, I have been doing 3 egg whites and 1 whole egg on the grittle with some red potatos and pico de gallo salsa. Yum!
Another option would be, oatmeal pancakes. I dont like them, but I know a lot of people who do. Use sugar free syrup if you can. 🙂

I use the Visalus Body by Vi protein which is non GMO and has no sugar. It taste like cake mix. Haha! You can check it out if you want www.irenebancroft.myvi.net
I make a shake every day and then I also make a crepe with a 1/2 cup egg whites, 2 scoops of my shake mix and handful of berries. Mix, pour in skillet and cook. It takes 3 minutes to make and is so delicious. Just another way for me to get my protein in and actually chew. 🙂

Body By Vi is a multi marketing scam! Their shakes do not contain protein that is digestable by the body and are full of chemicals and garbage. They hava measily 12 grams of protein for their 90 calories and are very expensive. Best to skip the multi-level marketing crud and get quality products!
