What's the best protein for breakfast?

ANSWERED

Hi everyone and Merry Christmas! Just got my Fitbit Force and am wondering what's the best protein for breakfast? I make my own breakfast smoothies during the week and usually add protein powder to them. Right now I have Pure Protein Whey 25 mg, I bought this from Walmart. Is one protein powder better than the other?

Eggs have gotten an unfair bad rap when it comes to cholesterol and heart disease.  A recent study from the National Institutes of Health shows that egg yolks are not a significant source of serum cholesterol and, more generally, dietary cholesterol (what you eat) has little to no effect on chronic heart disease.  It's the trans fats you have to watch out for -- certain kinds of fats raise serum cholesterol.  Eggs are a wonderfully healthy food and tasty too!

Same with me.  One hard boiled egg every morning along with my yogurt/fruit/homemade granola parfait.  I often top the smashed up egg with low fat cottage cheese and drizze sirachi red sauce over it.  Takes it up a notch.  Very good.

I've gotten in the habit of keeping soft boiled eggs in the fridge and I'll have one within a short while of me waking up. I also do oatmeal or low fat Greek yogurt to help get the protein in early on.  I never have been much of a breakfast eater, but the boiled egg is easy to do and Greek yogurt isn't bad at all, both quick and easy if you're not wanting to spend a lot of time in the kitchen, or have others in the house preparing breakfast items.

I put 2 fresh egg whites in very small  bowl and microwave for one minute.  Toast one piece of whole wheat bread, and swipe it in one teaspoon of xv olive oil. Cut the toast in half, add Nature's Seasoning and it's a delish sandwich! Healthy protein & fat source and small carb.  Favorite breakfast.   I eat a cup of cantaloupe midmorning and a cup of Greek yogurt for lunch with a salad + 4 oz of albacore tuna drained and rinsed in cold water on top.  Tablespoon of peanut butter and an apple mid afternoon.  Works for me.

I add whey powder to my breakfast shake.  18 grams protein per scoop.  I add to 11 oz almond milk, 3/4 cup frozen berries, a serving of greens powder - blend and drink OR  I pour into empty water bottle and take with me for a nourishing low cal lunch when I am on the go! (in a small cooler in hot weather).

Since Eggs seem to be coming up over and over in the responses about protein for breakfast, I stumbled on something that is pretty good. Old fashioned oatmeal with some drained, rinsed black beans splinkled on top, then topped off with a hard boiled egg mushed in the oatmeal. Sprinkle a bit of turmeric on it and a few pumpkin seeds or walnuts and a high protein breakfast that is filling, nutritious and very tasty. Seems odd with eggs in the oatmeal but actually very good.

I don't know what the best is...but this is what I have for breaksfast and it has 17 grams of protein and about 300 calories per serving

2 cups almond milk

3 cups fresh spinach

1 scoop chocolate protein powder (not sure on brand, mine has 100 calories and 4 grams carbs comes in  a huge blue plastic tub got it from Vitamin Shop)

1 frozen banana

8 fresh mint leaves

ice (optional)

Blend in blender until smooth

This keeps me full for a few hours and it's super delicious

Otherwise I normally would do eggs with some homemade sausage if I wanted protein that way

Also for something on the go I like to make egg muffins.

I mix up some eggs, add a little bit of shredded cheese, homemade fresh turkey sausage and if you have any fav veggies go ahead and throw them in. I pour into a baking dish (I spray it with coconut oil first) and bake in the oven then when cool I cut it into squares then place in the freezer. This way in the morning all I have to do is pull one out and microwave it if I'm heading out the door. You can bake in a muffin tin but I find they stick pretty bad.

Going to mix up a batch this week but going to try it with all egg substitute and see how it comes out.

Best morning protien can be a very loaded question..lol 🙂

It really depends on what you are wanting to accomplish with your protien of choice.  I suggest, if possible, to get a good blend of different types of protien.  You body takes protien from different sources at different rates.  For example, Whey protien Isolate, you body on average will process and use about 10 grams per hour. (please keep in mind that these are general numbers and info)  Eggs are considered a medium protien, so your body processes and uses around 7-6 grams of protien per hour.  Casien is considered a slow use protien, running at about 5 grams an hour that your body can process.  Newer studies out of San Diego State, and University of Florida suggest that a mix of protiens during each of your meals is the best results for protien replacement and processing by your body through out the day.

Here is an example of what I have in the morning for breakfast:  (I do heavy lifting 5 days a week)

when first waking up:

half scoop of Whey protien Isolate (10g) (Fast)

Half scoop of Casien protien (10g) (Slow)

After about 30 to 60 mintues

5 whole eggs with (30g) (Medium)

1/5 to 1/4 cup of mix shreeded cheese (9.6g) (*Fast/Slow)

If you don't like using protien powder then here is another good morning breakfast for protien that I use

5 whole eggs with (30g) (Medium)

1/5 to 1/4 cup of mix shreeded cheese (9.6g) (*Fast/Slow)

1 8oz glass of Milk (8g Fast/Slow) (stay way from chocolate milk, unless you want the sugar/high carbs in the morning)

This mix and contiuing to mix protiens through out the day gives your body a consistent stream of protien to your body ensuring you muscle can repair, build, or maintain as needed through out the day.  It also helps to give your body a complete ammio acid build as well.

*any dairy products such as cheese, milk, etc have a mix of Whey and Casien, this is what protien powder is typically refinded from.

I hope this helps.

Over 10 years ago, I lost 100 pounds without surgery, and I have kept it off. For breakfast, I would have an egg white omelet with a few fresh strawberries or a few slices of fresh pineapple.  I found that eating carbs at breakfast was not the best thing for me as it slowed me down.  I do feel there is a place for protein shakes, but honestly I think the best thing to do when you can is eat the food as opposed to drinking your meals.

The protein and fruit was great.

Good for you in your weight victory. I imagine you enjoy your egg and fruit just as much as empty carb food. I eat 2 scrambled eggs and a fresh orange and like them both very much. My cholesterol is still normal in spite of the eggs and my weight is stable. Discovery

Oh yes! I don't miss the carbs at all. I do eat a low carb diet because I don't believe in no carbs at all. I also whip the egg whites in a paper cup then put them in the microwave as another person on this thread mentioned. Then just throw the cup away. Easy and FAST!

For men and women alike taking protein immediately after lifting weights will be the first thing your body absorbs and you will be able to 'repair your damaged muscles.' Equally so in the morning .. would you prefer your body first absorbs amino acids /protein or that horrible pastry that will have you crashing soon?

Try these "protein pancakes":

To make 4 - 5 pancakes, in a blender: 10 egg whites, 1 banana, 1 scoop protein, 1 scoop dry oatmeal + pinch each cinnamon & nutmeg blend well and cook thin pancakes in a small pan with a light spray of olive oil. Our latest protein powder is blueberry muffin flavor, I've added several blueberries or strawberries to the blender mix for antioxidants & natural fruit flavor, and I've also added a few whole blueberries to the  pancake in the pan. YUM. If you already eat a ton of egg whites in every shape and form like I do you should enjoy these. Sit tight while you slowly cook each pancake and be careful on the flip, but you'll have a light protein rich breakfast item for a few mornings in a row. Great w/ coffee!

Egg white omelette : sautee thinly sliced onion & mushroom in olive oil, then add 6 beat eggwhites to your small pan.

Also try hard boiled egg whites on salad, in veggie soup, or stir your brothy soup constantly as you pour beat eggwhites into the soup for 'egg flower' soup (try chicken broth + chopped green onion).

And my nostalgic favorite egg salad: Try 4 boiled eggs, only 1 yolk + a trace amount of mayo and mustard, and skip the bread!

14 grams of Designer Whey in my coffee =16 g protein, 3 net carbs & 46 cals! I then start drinking on a new whey protein shot in 22 oz of H20=42 grams protein! It's a work in progress everyday. Stay creative to get protein in and keep moving as much as possible. Even if it means printing a report page by page so I can run to the copier more.
