im trying to get into better shape and i just got my fitbit on thursday to keep records and i was wondering how i could stay within my callorie count and lost my fat while still being healthy and gaining muscle cause im going to the gym at the same time

Exertion, very active minutes - just getting your steps IMO will not do it...didn't for me. Started working when I started doing walking at "fast" paces every day.
