My new Inspire 3 is basically useless for swimming. I'm able to start the swimming function and start the timer. The screen then locks and it won't turn back on unless I charge it fully in it's docking station.

Have you done the double tap on the screen?  It will then light up and say double tap to unlock..... then you can click on continue or finish.
