Missing Steps on the Elliptical

I've noticed a huge discrepancy between the amount of strides the elliptical counts and the amount of steps my Fitbit counts (and it's a huge difference, the elliptical will count close to 8000 steps for my workout while I only get about 4100 on the Fitbit). I've tried both pumping my arms and moving them while holding on to the handles but no luck. Any tips or tricks on making the Fitbit count the elliptical steps more accurately?
