Hi, @waldo39, welcome to the community. You may find this article of interest How do I track swims with my Fitbit device? , Note the advice about how you swim. I apologise if you have already seen it.
As you are running a new device I would not expect you to be having this experience so please allow me to offer my experience swimming daily. I use the auto-recognize feature, before entering the water I engage the waterlock, I swim & on my return home sync my phone app to see the data. There is nothing to do on completion of the swim as the device recognizes I have stopped swimming. To ensure this function works without a glitch I have checked the auto-recognize settings. From the "Today" screen in the phone app, I touch my icon in the top left corner>activity & wellness>exercise>swimming, I have set the "Longer than" at 10 minutes and made sure the slider is in the "on" position then "SAVE"
The alternative method of recording the swim is to use the Inspire 3 exercise setting. From the clock screen swipe left to and touch "Exercise">swipe up to & touch "Swim"(this automatically sets the waterlock)>start arrow>on completion touch the pause icon & then "Finish"> swipe up to and touch "Done".
You do not mention which of these you use, nor do you mention the make & model of the phone you are using Fitbit Supported Devices explains some issues.
Another area you might like to investigate is the settings in the Fitbit app on your phone (I'm not familiar with the iPhone but these are the Android settings to look at). From your phone settings>apps>Fitbit>allow all permissions>clear cache>check Mobile data & WiFi background data unrestricted data usage is allowed and you have sufficient credit in your cellphone data account>Set the app battery usage to unrestricted>return to the app home screen & sync.
When you are syncing you do of course need your Inspire 3 to be within Bluetooth range of your phone. Are you having a syncing issue? These articles may help How do Fitbit devices sync their data? and Why won't my Fitbit device sync?
I hope this helps, let us know how you get on.
Cheers

Thanks It is meant to auto recognise, which it did "sometimes" I have water lock on permanent, So If I didnt go swimming would probably have never been an issue, however I have sent it back for in warranty exchange, problem solved.
Also new unit auto synced as I left the changing room, in to wifi reception area, but thanks any way

So today the New unit failed to record swim and infact any exercise but it has recorded zone minutes at the time of swim ###### Just checked your suggestion on app settings. Permission not allowed on physical activity WTF mind of its own the app !! See what happens next week. Thanks for the nod
