Android sync location requirement

Overall am really happy with my Fitbit ionic but the whole needing location to be turned on for syncs is frustrating.

Yes I know this is an android issue not a fitbit one but it's still very frustrating.

I don't want to leave it on all day because it drains the battery so then syncing becomes a very manual process. On top of that if I don't sync for 5-6 hours, ionic stops getting notifications. As soon as location is turned on & it's synced again, notifications start working.

And then there are times when the location isn't on but ionic still syncs fine.

Overall its pretty annoying, is there a way around turning on location every time? how do other android users deal with this?

Swipe down the notifications panel and turn on notification services, note this does not turn on notification.

If the notification services turned on drains the battery, you have some app requesting your notification.

Could it be Google maps that by default tracks a history of where you have been?

I always leave location services turned on as I like the Google location notifications etc, I've never noticed a negative effect on battery life though. As far as I know the phone will only use GPS for precise location eg. Maps. I guess you could go into your phone settings and change it to Mobile networks only (Battery saver or whatever it's called now). This should allow you to keep location services on without the fear of GPS being active.

I have never not had Location Services enabled, and it has never caused any significant battery drain.

I have an old Samsung Galaxy S4 and location services kills my battery too.  I usually keep it off unless using Google Maps or weather apps.  I don't keep the Fitbit app running on my phone, but when I want to sync, I've learned to switch on location services and bluetooth.  When done syncing, I turn them both off.

Isn't Marshmallow version 6 and Nougat 7?

My phone has an Oreo build, but I'm not brave enough to install it yet.

You are right, @WavyDavey. Sorry. A Senior Moment... I was on 6.0 Marsmallow, and now am on 7.0 Nougat.
