Elevation gain not tracked can you add that feature?

I’ve noticed that other people have the same issue as me. Their elevation gain is not tracked would you include that in one of the upcoming updates?

Also, I would love to see each mile in the total route highlighted in a different color or when pressing on the mile number to see the data better on each individual mile in a multi-mile hike (especially when they’re convoluted).

Thank you!

@Patyr1

I'd like to see elevation gain on the watch and the Android app too. Right now, only the Fitbit dashboard shows elevation gain and the Strava app on the watch.

I agree, elevation gain at a glance is the stat I want to see most when Cycling!!!

Best Answer

@Patyr1 the Elevation is tracked while on a walk. run, etc and total gain is shown on the summary after the run is finished. It is also shown on fitbit.com when looking at the map of your ride. Currently elevation is not available through the app.

Are you asking about the ability to sea elevation changes live while you're on a walk? Or is it that you want the total elevation change displayed on the app?

You might want to vote for one of the following suggestions.

Live Elevation Data (including changes during run/...

Include Elevation in Mobile App

I wish to see live elevation as I am riding.

That you did mention. The OP was not very specific on where the elevation is wanted to be seen .

@jwebb72 Sorry, been MIA. Yeah, I know of third party apps that track elevation pretty well (like Strava), but I’d like to see FItbit do the same!

@Rich_Laue Thank you for those links! I went ahead and voted, but seeing the elevation gain live would be great; however if that’s not possible, at least have the ability to see it on the app.

Even now, when I look at the summary it’s not very clear as, for example Strava. I have been a Fitbit user for a while now, but we shouldn’t have to go to third-party apps to get a more comprehensive understanding of activities if this is what Fitbit specializes on.

If you swipe up from the bottom of your watch and then swipe left on your step count, you can see your entire Dashboard, including flights, on your watch.  I just figured that out last week!

@DramaQueenDiva  Ah, yeah. For me, I have to swipe to the right but I see it. It’s the stairs icon. Do you know how many ft of elevation = flight of stairs?

It would be a lot simpler to have a specific icon for each activity (to measure elevation) like a mountain for hiking etc.

Thank you.

I think 6ft of elevation equals 1 flight of stairs, but I'm not sure.

@DramaQueenDiva

Yes, I know about that metric on the watch but, floors climbed for the day is much different than total elevation gain for a run/walk/hike. Floors climbed uses the barometric pressure and elevation gain uses the GPS (if used). BTW, a floor is considered to be 10 ft. Hope that helps.

@DramaQueenDiva and @Patyr1 it is 10 feet for one flight.

How does my Fitbit device count floors?

@jwebb72 I'm not sure what Fitbit used to calculate elevation when out walking, etc .

GPS and accuracy in altitude is not very good, about 50% worse then horizontal accuracy only good to +-50 feet. That is why airplane pilots can only use GPS as a backup for altitude. Communication with 6 satellites  are also required also.

I just purchased the Ionic, and am considering taking it back, because I can't believe that elevation gain is not included with the stats of a run/hike. It seems like a no-brainer, because elevation gain is equally as important as distance. And it would also factor in when calories burned is calculated.

@Pritch28 the elimination gain is tracked,  and displayed on the map when viewed through the web.

The so does not display this feature.

Have you added your vote to the suggestion?

IncludeElevation in Mobile App

Best Answer

I tried to post on that thread, but it looks like it is locked. Find it hard to believe that people have been requesting that the elevation gain be added to the app for a few years now, and it still hasn’t happened. It is a no-brainer. Users shouldn’t have to go to the website to view elevation gain. It should be on the app right next to distance. This shouldn’t be a hard thing for developers to add.

@Pritch28 you did add your vote?

In  3 years only 175 people seem to want this,  with many other suggestions getting 1000 a year and a few having hundreds in three first month,  this suggestion is not very high up in the chart.

Best Answer

Yes but this is just common sense in my opinion, and something that should have been on the app by default. Everyone knows that elevation gain in a workout obviously makes it more difficult, and is a key component. A five mile hike down a level trail is much different than a five mile hike gaining 1,500 feet.

Yes i wasn’t able to post, but I could vote, so thanks for pointing that out.

One also knows that Fitbit has never used changes on elevation I'm the calculation of calories burnt
