Guys a quick question, if one initiates an Exercise, say a Hike, do you have to keep the application 'fronted' for the entire duration of the hike? Or can one return the Ionic to the watch face and then go back into the Exercise app at the end of the hike to turn off tracking?
I've a horrible feeling I have to leave the app in placed for it to work but if anyone could confirm that would be wonderful.

What @SunsetRunner. However you have 2 shortcuts that can be helpful: the right upper button long pressactions brings you notifications while the left button long press brings you quick actions and music control.
Since I don't live in US I think the left button long press will take you to Fitbit Pay as well.

Giampi71, NONE of the buttons work as you describe when a manually invoked exercise is in progress which is the question asked by the poster and which I answered. Those buttons can not be used to bring up any screen not related to the exercise in progress.
During the exercise, the LEFT button cycles through stats chosen to display in the middle stat screen for the exercise. The Right lower button Pauses the exercise and the Right upper button invokes the End screen. All the buttons are returned to their Normal use ONLY after DONE is selected.

@SunsetRunner I don't know what version of Fitbit OS your Ionic uses but on mine (Fitbit OS 2) the LONG PRESS of the LEFT and TOP RIGHT buttons work as I described.
I am on OS2 and we are talking about when a manual exercise is in progress, NOT the normal situation.

I'm speaking too about manual activated exercise.

I think you missed the LONG press
You are correct, I never thought to try the long press. It acts normally bringing up the Screen Wake and Notifications screen and you can swipe to Music controls and, I believe, the Fitbit Pay screen although I don't use either so can't be sure. Thank you for pointing that out.

No problem @SunsetRunner.
I think this is another improvement of Fitbit OS 2 that is worthy to highlight.
