I recently had to replace my ionic at approximately 6 months. Fitbit customer support is wonderful. I was very pleased. However, I am wondering what went wrong in the first place. I am a very busy executive director and don't have alot of time to replace products in my life.
I thought that the watch was waterproof, since it has a swim function but looking back it is only listed as water resistant. Perhapes the watch will last more than six months if I don't use the swim features? Has anyone used the swim feature on their Fitbit Ionic for more than a year without problems?
Thank you for your consideration of this question. I love my watch and want it to last.

No. You can use auto track to track swimming where you dont turn the swim exercise on. I used to do that and never had an issue. I think there was a problem with your original Ionic. Hope this one treats you well!

I swim regularly in my Ionic and my Versa and they are both still going strong. The listing as water resistant means it is fine to swim in them in pool conditions where there are not surges in water pressure as there may be in the ocean. This isnt to say you cant wear them in the ocean, but you need to avoid rough conditions where wave pressure might exceed the limits of the watch. Also make sure you rinse off the salt water afterwards.
I have no idea what went wrong with your Ionic, but it shouldnt have been the fact that you swim that caused it (unless it was defective).

I have had my Ionic for a while now, and never had any trouble with it. You probably just had a defective one.

I did do some swimming in a salt water pool that was relatively warm. Maybe I should skip warm salt water pools?

Yes @2rxlisa the watch is only listed as water resistant to about 150 feet. This is because of regulations that went into law back in the 1960's. Since then he device can be completly water proof I' the USA it is not legal to use the term waterproof.

Some times I got into the pool before I turned on the Swim tracking feature. Would that make the watch less waterproof?

Nice to see you again here @2rxlisa.
You have a good observation there. As @NellyG mentioned, Fitbit Ionic automatically tracks your swim duration and pool lengths completed.. Enter your pool length to track your distance and duration. Note that heart-rate tracking is disabled during your swim workout.
Use automatic tracking or the Exercise app to capture swim lengths, duration, distance, and pace.
Set your pool length on your device. For instructions, see How do I set the pool length for my Fitbit device?
For more information about wearing your Fitbit device, see our Wear and Care page.
Let me know if you have questions about it.
