Fitbit Update: 10/9

Hi everyone,

We’re excited to announce the release of Fitbit OS 4.0.2, available for Ionic (Firmware Version: 27.68.9.15).

We've begun releasing this new firmware to customers. This is a progressive rollout which means everyone will receive it at different stages until it has been completely released to all users. We roll out releases in phases as a cautionary measure so that we can monitor performance closely and make adjustments if needed.

*Firmware releases are not distributed based on region or location and can reach anyone no matter where you reside. We do not recommend performing a factory reset to force the update to your device as your data will be lost and you may not get the update. Please be patient and wait until you see the update banner inside of the Fitbit app to begin the firmware download.

This release includes bug fixes and improvements.

Seems to be alot of people having the same issue.

They are going to replace mine after a chat with the online help as its still under warranty

very weird that we are all experiencing the same thing. Im still waiting for another response from them...

Mine stopped working also.  It happened during the update.  It stopped in the first quarter of the update so I took it off the charger thinking I would start again but it just froze with the fitbit logo on the screen.  It was on the charger so I know it didn't lose power.  No success with a restart or hard reset.  Did the online chat with a fitbit rep.  He was no help.  He did the usual stuff like checking the bluetooth, hard reset etc.  He said the warranty period was over and gave me 25% a new fitbit.  Frankly, I am not sure I want to buy another when it only lasted a year and a half.

Same issue as me.  My firmware completely installed.  Everything was working.

In the morning I woke up and my fitbit ionic was bricked.  I could see it sync at 2:30AM in morning, I suspect after the sync it bricked.

I was late to work because I use my fit bit as an alarm.

My entire family including kids have fitbits. I recommended it to friends and family all the time.

Hopefully fitbit admit to this issue and respond appropriately.  Otherwise I have to move away from the fitbit eco system.

I'm having the same issue, mine keeps dying over night and wont respond to anything. Then if I put it on charge it says it has 48% left on battery.

This is only after firmware update. I love my Ionic but this has bog all to do with the internals of my device!

I'm on Android and my watch died 2 days ago.  I've been trying to charge it.  It keeps saying 0% and wont charge.  I didn't even get a chance to update to the new firmware on it, Please help

I purchased an extended warranty with BestBuy. I'm going to check and see if its still available.  I can't believe it was working just fine and now it will not turn on or charge!  I didn't even get a chance to update it yet.

Mine is the same. 14 months old. Was working fine. Installed the update, later that day it was blank and not responding. No green lights. Plugging in to charge does nothing. Contacted Fitbit. They are opening a case for me.

I have been watching this thread, not happy with Fitbits responses.

I have not updated, will not update unless it is fixed! If I am forced to update my out of warranty watch i will move over to Garmin.

I just finished connecting my Garmin accounts to myfitness account.

Off to look at Garmins watches.

Still getting battery drain so bad that it is struggling to last for a day.

My original update was on Android via Bluetooth.

Last night, I removed the Fitbit from my account, performed a full factory reset of the Ionic and added it back onto the App.

I updated via WiFi in under 15 minutes and it still struggles to last 24 hours. I am using a FitBit watch face and using the same settings as I was prior to updating yet getting half the run time, and then I was running a 3rd party watch face prior.

Any other troubleshooting suggestions before I try to contact support when I know I'm about 10 days outside my 2 year warranty.

What I don't get is, if the numbers really are that low, the what is stopping Fitbit from replacing those few

Surely from a customer experience perspective replacing even a 100 Ionics is better than the negative press they are getting from us few.

The upside is the company gets to be seen in a positive light, not doing it and the downside is potentially massive

Really don't get where Fitbit management's head is. Has anyone tried emailing the CEO, maybe Snr Mgmt truly have no idea what is happening in the real world

Best Answer

@Beachbum2D If you care to compare Fitbit and Garmin share prices I would hope the CEO is aware of the underlying issues.  Question is, at this point, what can be done about it.

Right now Im so done with Fitbit that they could send me a replacement for the Ionic that they bricked and I would still abandon the company and take as many of my family and friends with me as possible.

Hi guys, how would Apple handle such a thing? Would they replace devices out of warranty if it is not a clear problem on their side? Would you do it if you were an enterpreneur? It is a **ahem** **ahem**ing thing if something like that happens do you. I also would not be happy if such a thing would happen to me. But can you really blame a company not to replace defective devices out of warranty?

Maybe you have to question the laws in your country. Why is there only 12 months warranty and not 24 months like here in Europe? I think we also pay for it indirectly because devices are more expensive compared to the US.

But Fitbit clearly has to do its homework better. They need do design their update mechanismn more stable. It is in their own interest. If it fails and bricks devices in the warranty period they have to provide expensive replacements. As side effect all other users out of warranty do not have to fear future updates.

It seems as if the FitBit moderators are tap dancing around the obvious frustrations. The firmware and/or calibration caused the malfunction. Iconic watches will not turn on, respond nor connect. Suggestions that involve any of those is not a solution. Going through the FitBit community and reading online, this is a massive problem. This isn't a single one off instance. I've been a long time loyal customer. Upgrading with each new more advance watch. This. This is absolutely ubsurd. Fitbit needs to take pride in their company and rectify the seemingly thousands of watches effected. Many customers are switching to other more reputable brands. I'm highly considering the same. If FitBit stake holders dont respond appropriately, be prepared to lose stock  and all the value that came with it.

Truly upsetting!!

This update bricked my Ionic, and Fitbit support won't do anything about it other than offer me a 25% discount to buy a new one. So frustrating after about 7 years of loyalty and advocacy for them.

Best Answer

Im very happy to say that they have offered me a replacement.
They did not say it is anything to do with the upgrade, but it does seem suspicious as so many have experienced this in the last few days...
Mine was out of warranty, no proof of purchase as it was a gift.
Its worth logging a report.
Needless to say I am quite happy to be back on track!

Awesome! I will log my report right now.

@benedikt.ebli

yes I can blame Fitbit. It was their faulty recent update that bricked my device and there is no way to avoid it.

It’s clear that these are not isolated incidents due to worn out individual ionic failures, These were perfectly fine functioning devices that iappears to have been killed by aN unavoidable and negligent system update.

I have turned the brightness to automatic as I think I set it up as the brightest option when it updated. I just did it this morning after a full charge all night And am monitoring to see if this helps...
