It could be a number of things, @JudyWeild, and is hard to tell. Were your arms swinging freely during the walk? Or, were you using a walking stick, or carrying anything? Were you holding your arm in front of you so that you could watch the screen on the Ionic? Any other info you can provide?

Have you tried restarting the Ionic? Sometimes this solves issues like this. Hold the left button and bottom right button together for 15 secs (until you see the fitbit logo), let go and wait for the Ionic to restart. Hopefully this will solve your problem.
